Role Description The current opening for Public Safety Dispatcher is a part-time, on-site role located at the Florham Park Police Department in Florham Park, NJ. This position is responsible for answering emergency and non-emergency calls, gathering critical information, and dispatching appropriate police, fire, and EMS units in a timely manner. The role includes monitoring multiple communication systems, maintaining accurate records of calls and responses, and updating units with relevant information to support safe and effective incident management. The dispatcher collaborates closely with law enforcement and other public safety personnel, follows established protocols and procedures, and provides calm, clear guidance to community members during stressful situations. The role requires consistent attention to detail, adherence to confidentiality standards, and the ability to work assigned shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. It is worth noting that historically, many part time (per diem) dispatchers have led to full-time positions.
Qualifications
• Demonstrated proficiency in Emergency Medical Dispatch and coordination with Emergency Services.
• Experience in Dispatching for public safety agencies or similar high-volume communication environments is preferred, but not required.
• Strong Communication skills, including clear spoken communication, active listening, and accurate documentation.
• Familiarity with Law Enforcement operations, terminology, and basic procedures.
• Ability to remain calm under pressure, prioritize multiple calls, and make sound decisions quickly.
• Comfort with computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems, radios, and other communication technology.
• High school diploma or equivalent; additional coursework or certification in public safety communications is preferred.
• Willingness to complete required training, background checks, and any mandated state certifications.
• Reliable attendance, ethical conduct, and commitment to the department’s values of professionalism, integrity, accountability, and compassion.
