Project Engineer
Mid-States CompaniesWhy Mid-States Since 2001, Mid-States has designed, fabricated, installed, and serviced the systems that keep agricultural and processing facilities running — on job sites across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. We're family-owned and family-run, and we've grown by investing in the people who plan, build, and lead our work. That shows up in how we take care of our team: a 100% company-paid health plan option, a 5% 401(k) match, and profit sharing for every team member, to name a few. The Opportunity Mid-States Millwright & Builders is looking for a Project Engineer to own the planning and scheduling backbone of our construction projects. You'll build and maintain the schedules our crews work from, sequence the work, and make sure the field has the drawings, materials, and equipment it needs — right when it needs them. Working alongside our Project Managers, Superintendents, and Assistant Project Managers, you'll be the connection point between design, manufacturing, finance, and field operations, keeping projects on time, on budget, safe, and built to Mid-States standards. It's a role for someone early in their construction career who likes seeing a plan come together on site — and who wants room to grow as we do. What You'll Do Build baseline project schedules during preconstruction with the Project Manager and Superintendent — defining activities, durations, sequencing, and milestones from contract documents, estimates, and manufacturing lead times. Keep schedules current and produce short-term look-ahead schedules the field can work from day to day. Track progress using daily field reports and site communication, catch delays and critical path impacts early, and recommend recovery plans. Coordinate fabrication and delivery timing with our design and manufacturing teams so equipment and materials arrive when the field is ready for them. Develop crew and manpower loading plans and help calculate production rates to support accurate scheduling and resource planning. Manage the submittal process so it supports production and installation, and track RFIs through to resolution. Give the field what it needs to make decisions and execute — layout drawings, lift plans, equipment sequencing, and installation details. Monitor procurement and delivery status, and process project purchasing through our ERP system with established vendors. Evaluate the schedule impact of change orders, support change request pricing, and maintain the change log with the Project Manager and finance team. Support cost projections, schedule reporting, and monthly project reports. Lead or participate in schedule reviews with customers, subcontractors, and internal teams. Build safety planning and site requirements into work sequencing, and promote adherence to OSHA, company, and customer safety standards. Support commissioning, start-up, punch lists, owner training, and closeout, including as-builts and final documentation. Capture actual durations and lessons learned to sharpen our schedule templates and estimates for future projects. What You Bring Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Construction Engineering, Engineering, or a related field — or an equivalent combination of experience and training. 2–5+ years of experience in construction, project engineering, scheduling, or a related field. Working knowledge of construction scheduling methods, including critical path scheduling and look-ahead planning. Proficiency in Microsoft Project or similar scheduling software, plus Microsoft Excel and Word. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents. Strong math skills, organization, and attention to detail. Clear communication and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work collaboratively across multiple teams. Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English. Willingness to travel to project sites, including overnight travel …
