Project Designer —Cabinetry Specialist Job Description Reports to: Design Principal & Brand Director Department: Design Position Summary The Project Designer - Cabinetry Specialist is a client-facing design professional responsible for developing and managing high-end custom cabinetry, architectural millwork, and selected residential interior design projects under the M.R. Brewer brand. This position connects creative design intent with the technical requirements of estimating, fabrication, construction, and installation. Working with a high degree of independence and commercial accountability, the Project Designer guides assigned projects from the initial client interview and space-planning process through design approval, proposal development, field verification, and coordinated handoff to Millwork and Construction. The Project Designer serves as the primary design contact for assigned clients and collaborates closely with the Design Principal, Design Operations & Technical Specialist, Project Managers, project foremen, and Millwork team. Success in this role requires strong design judgment, detailed cabinetry knowledge, accurate documentation, confident client communication, and an understanding of how design decisions affect project cost, constructability, schedule, and profitability. Core Responsibilities 1. Cabinetry Design & Layout Engineering Design Strategy: Lead in-depth client design interviews to define spatial goals, layout functionality, appliance integration, and target aesthetics. Technical Space Planning: Engineer detailed cabinetry layouts, elevations, and installation details, with a rigorous focus on architectural style, clearances, and ergonomics. Component Specification: Select and specify precise cabinet door styles, construction methods, wood species, finish substrates, and specialized interior hardware. Field Verification: Conduct independent site visits and precision field measures to ensure drafting sets translate perfectly to physical spaces without fabrication errors. 2. Client Relations & Proposal Generation Account Leadership: Act as the primary day-to-day point of contact for clients on assigned projects, confidently moving them through the design and selections process. Proposal Authorship: Calculate accurate cabinetry components, moldings, and material costs to write and present clear, concise client proposals and design contracts. Presentation Delivery: Present technical drawings, layouts, material samples, and aesthetic palettes directly to clients to secure design approvals. 3. Field, Shop Floor & Team Collaboration Construction Liaison: Meet directly with the project foreman and Project Managers to review millwork details, answer site questions in a timely manner, and protect design intent. Shop Walk-throughs: Check in on cabinetry fabrication on the shop floor and conduct regular job-site walk-throughs during critical installation phases (cabinetry, tile, hardware). Internal Team Hand-offs: Provide clear project data and final material selections to the Design Operations & Technical Specialist to initiate the backend quoting, procurement, and CRM archiving phases. Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design, Architecture, or a related field. Experience: 3–6 years of experience in residential interior design, with a strong, verifiable portfolio in detailed kitchen, bath, and custom millwork design. Software Proficiency: Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD, Chief Architect, or industry-standard cabinetry drafting programs, alongside Microsoft Office Suite. Key Attributes: Confident client-facing communication skills with the ability to articulate design logic and close sales.
