Priority may be given to the following designated employment equity groups: women, Indigenous Peoples* (First Nations, Inuit and Métis), persons with disabilities and racialized persons*. The Employment Equity Act , which is under review, uses the terminology Aboriginal peoples and visible minorities. Candidates are asked to self-declare when applying to this hiring process. City: Ottawa Organizational Unit: Construction Classification: RO Tenure: Term Duration: 2 years Language Requirements: English Work arrangements: Due to the nature of the work and operational requirements, this position may be eligible for a limited hybrid work arrangement (combination of working onsite and telework). At the NRC, we recognize that Indigenous candidates may have important connections to their communities and you may be eligible for an exception to this work arrangement. Alternative work arrangements may also be considered to accommodate candidates as required. To learn more about these options, please contact the NRC Hiring team using the contact information below. The program The NRC’s Postdoctoral Fellowship program offers PDFs access to unique world-class facilities and the opportunity to work alongside multi-disciplinary teams of expert researchers and technicians on projects of critical importance to Canada. PDFs will carry out research on innovative research projects, with opportunities for career development (publications and/or industry interaction). PDFs will be offered appointments to the staff of the National Research Council on a term basis and will be offered salaries and benefits currently available to Research Officers. Salaries commensurate with experience are taxable and subject to other deductions. As a guide, the current annual PhD recruiting rate is $83,985. In addition, PDFs will be allocated a travel fund to support their work. Project title Engineered Recycled Glass as a Supplementary Cementitious Material for Low Carbon, High Performance Concrete Stabilizing the Supply Chain in Canada The role Concrete, the most widely used construction material worldwide, is essential for resilient infrastructure but also generates significant greenhouse gas emissions due to cement production. A key strategy for reducing these emissions is lowering the clinker content of cement through supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). However, the traditional SCM supply chain is shrinking as coal power generation is phased out and steel production technologies evolve, creating an emerging materials challenge for low‑carbon concrete in Canada. This project will address the challenge by investigating ground recycled glass (GRG) as a scalable, sustainable alternative SCM supporting both decarbonization and circular economy objectives. The PDF will play a central role in designing and executing the experimental research program. Responsibilities will include investigating hydration kinetics and pozzolanic reactivity in cementitious systems incorporating GRG, evaluating the fresh and hardened performance of concrete mixtures, and conducting life cycle and techno-economic assessments. Education Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Cement Chemistry, or a closely related discipline. For information on certificates and diplomas issued abroad, please see Degree equivalency Experience Significant experience in cementitious materials research, including cement chemistry, hydration mechanisms, supplementary cementitious materials, concrete performance evaluation, and/or low-carbon concrete technologies. Experience in the full spectrum of research activities, including identifying research needs, developing research proposals, planning and managing projects, conducting laboratory investigations, analyzing and interpreting data, and disseminating results through technical reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications. Experience in the design, execution, and interpretation of laboratory experiments relat…
