Supervisory Summary: Directs single site, multishift, manufacturing operations in conjunction with supervisor, lead positions, and shop scheduler. Drives improvements processes in manpower, efficiencies, materials, and machines to meet customer demands while enhancing profitability.  Mentor apprentices, operators, machinists and lead employees.  This position can ultimately be responsible for 20+ employees.

 Machining Summary: Sets-up, operates, and troubleshoots conventional, special purpose, and computer numerical control (CNC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts.  Works with Engineering to start-up new parts.  Ensures the equipment is maintained and personnel are trained to fabricate high-quality parts.  Accomplishes this by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned. 

Technical responsibilities equivalent to that of a Lead Machinist including:

Operate Machines:

  • Loads starting material into machine and unloads machined part from machine.
  • Deburrs Parts as necessary for Inspection and Safety
  • Performs Daily Housekeeping around machine and Daily Maintenance checks.
  • Coordinates machine maintenance and machinery pm’s.
  • Adjusts tool offsets and other machine offsets such as fixture offsets, cutter comp, etc.
  • Sets/changes speed/feed rates to optimize machining process.

Set-Up Jobs:

  • For infrequently run and extremely high-value complex machining operations, installs and aligns holding fixtures and accessories on machines per green folder instructions.
  • Aligns and secures cutting tools into tool holders and then installs tool assemblies on machines per tool sheet.
  • Retrieves current revision CNC program and downloads to machine.
  • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts set-up as required to make part within specification.

Tooling:

  • Recognizes that tool wear has occurred.
  • Adjusts tool offsets as necessary.
  • Identifies correct tool versus the tool sheet and changes the tool in the machine.
  • Selects alternate tools and proves them out to improve machining processes or replace tooling that is no longer available.

CNC Program:

  • Reads CNC program line-by-line in order to follow tools paths.
  • Line-edits CNC code to improve processes. This could include significant, complex, editing.
  • Ability to create programs such as MasterCam, Part Maker, and Esprit software is preferred.

Manual Inspection:

  • Uses standard hand tools such as vernier calipers, micrometers, and hard gages to ensure that parts were fabricated within specifications.
  • Uses any specialty inspection device (ex: vision system) required in each machining cell.
  • Identify and use alternate inspection methods to validate quality readings from standard methods.

Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM):

  • Loads part onto CMM and operates CMM to ensure that parts were fabricated within specifications
  • Interprets CMM data to notice pattern shifts, quality trends, and other issues related to the machining process.
  • Identify and use alternate inspection methods to validate quality readings from standard methods.

Quality System & Documentation:

  • Reads and interprets blueprints, specifications, and quality plans so as to understand inspection requirements.
  • Fills out Quality System paperwork and enters data into computer as necessary.
  • Verifies and signs off 1st and last piece inspections.
  • Alters Green Folder and notifies Process Engineering in accordance with Quality System Procedures
  • Working knowledge of Excel, Word, and SolidWorks preferred
  • Dispositions discrepant material in accordance with Quality System Procedures
  • Approve NMRR’s within assigned dollar value limits.

Planning & Scheduling: 

  • Operates more than 1 machine at the same time, as required.
  • Assists in scheduling work on machines to enable employees to operate efficiently.
  • Will work a flexible schedule when required for training and issues related to machine, tooling, processing, etc.

Training:

  • Trains other employees in the basics of operating equipment on which employee is fully competent.
  • Ensures that employees assigned to the area are fully trained to perform all aspects of their job descriptions.
  • Provides input to Value Stream Manager for annual performance reviews and disciplinary discussions.
  • Mentors apprentices assigned to area of responsibility

Troubleshooting & Problem Solving:

  • Identifies problems and discerns between machine, work holding, material, tooling and CNC program issues.
  • Independently gathers and analyzes information, develops solutions and resolves problems in a timely manner.
  • Work with more senior machining employees, engineers, or supervisors when extremely difficult problems arise.

Process Design & Development:

  • Provides technical information and guidance to Engineering and Quality regarding process design.
  • Starts-Up new parts with some assistance from engineers and programmers on less complex parts.
  • Assists programmers and engineers on new part start up on more complex parts.

Repairs & Reworks:

  • Independently sets-up and reworks parts on CNC and manual machines.
  • Analyzes cause of discrepant material and provides remedial, corrective, and preventive actions.

Supervisory responsibilities including:

Provides leadership for employee relations through effective communications, coaching, training, and development.

Provides leadership for problem resolution to facilitate fast improvements and improved working relationships.

Provides budgeting support, planning, and auditing as required.  Generates necessary reports for the Operations group to support agreed upon targets are being met.

Identifies, communicates, and drives implementation of capital investments and improvement projects with the support of the Engineering & Facilities Manager

Carries out Supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training, planning and scheduling of work in the cell, directing employees, resolving problems and writing and giving employee performance reviews and disciplinary contacts.

Responsible for all activities in the assigned Machining Cells across the shop covering multiple shifts. Primary backup to other shop floor supervisory positions.  Will come in early or stay late to ensure proper shift overlap and follow up of issues.

Responsible for employee and facility Safety during assigned shift including Safety Walks, follow investigation and documentation of any near miss or safety incident.  Works with Safety Committee on all required follow up activities and documentation.

Evaluates daily customer demands and prioritizes jobs / manpower to meet those demands while maximizing productivity. Involved in manpower staffing decisions.

Tracks the progress of each manufacturing order so that customer demands are met.

Coordinates machine maintenance and machinery pm’s.

Confers with engineers, production personnel or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.

Education/Experience:

Bachelor degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering from a four-year college or university preferred.  Associates degree in Manufacturing Technology plus a minimum 5 years' of process engineering experience in a machine shop environment or at least 10 years of process engineering/programming experience in a machine shop environment.  5 years of lead machinist / direct supervisory experience.

Language Ability:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret blueprints, machine drawings, general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients and customers.

Math Ability:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret bar graphs

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Computer Skills:

Possess knowledge of Word Processing software; Spreadsheet software. CAD and CAM programming software such as Solidworks, MasterCam, and Part Maker or other manufacturer software.
