Project: Rail Billing Reporting & Automation

The Project Overview - This 12week internship will focus on automating rail billing KPI reporting and improving operational efficiency by reducing unnecessary email volume. The intern will partner closely with the rail billing and operations teams to streamline reporting, enhance data visibility, and help redirect nonactionable requests to the appropriate channels. This internship offers handson exposure to business process improvement, data analysis, and automation within a fastpaced logistics and transportation environment.


Project Outcomes:

  • Gain realworld experience in reporting automation and operational analytics
  • Learn how KPIs are measured and utilized in rail and logistics billing operations
  • Contribute to efficiency improvements that reduce manual effort and unnecessary work
  • Develop professional experience collaborating with crossfunctional business teams

Internship Responsibilities:

  • Automate daily rail billing KPI data to support daily, weekly, and monthly reporting
  • Create visual dashboards or reports to highlight trends, gaps, and immediate action items
  • Support the development and automation of a monthly rail billing report
  • Analyze incoming rail billing emails and classify them as submitted, actioned, or pending
  • Review historical email data to identify opportunities to prevent unnecessary rail billing inquiries
  • Assist in redirecting requestors to appropriate self service tools (e.g., supplier portal)
  • Help reduce non rail billing related email traffic in rail billing mailboxes
  • Document processes and provide recommendations for long term reporting and communication improvements

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed coursework in Business, Analytics, Supply Chain, Information Systems, or a related field
  • Strong experience with Microsoft Excel (data manipulation, formulas; automation exposure a plus)
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook
  • Interest or experience in reporting, automation, or process improvement
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work onsite in South Jordan UT (SLC location) for the duration of the internship

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Comfortable working with Excel for organizing and reviewing data
  • Ability to spot patterns, trends, and inconsistencies in reports and emails
  • Interest in improving processes and reducing manual work
  • Clear written communication and professional email etiquette
  • Ability to stay organized and manage recurring tasks
  • Willingness to learn reporting and automation tools
  • Ability to work collaboratively with operations and billing teams
