Introduction

RS Recruitment & Training is assisting a major South African coal export terminal to recruit an OPERATIONS MANAGER, to be based at their facilities in RICHARDS BAY. Remuneration: R1,1 million – R1,3 million per annum.

Job Purpose

 

The Operations Support Manager will provide strategic operational support across rail safety, operational services, contractor management, and specialist operational functions. The successful candidate will ensure regulatory compliance, operational governance, continuous improvement, and effective stakeholder engagement across the terminal’s high‑performance environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties & Responsibilities – but not limited to:

 

Management of Direct Reports

  • Lead, mentor, and manage operational support teams.

 

Rail Operations & Rail Safety

  • Oversee rail operations and ensure compliance with rail safety standards.
  • Manage relationships with rail stakeholders and ensure alignment with operational rules.

 

Operational Support & Contract Management

  • Manage operational support functions and contractor performance.
  • Ensure service delivery meets operational requirements and governance standards.

 

Regulatory Compliance & Risk

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant operational, safety, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Identify operational risks and implement mitigation strategies.

 

Continuous Improvement

  • Drive improvements in operational processes, systems, and efficiencies.
  • Support operational reform initiatives and evaluate their impact on terminal operations.

 

Stakeholder Management

  • Engage with coal exporting parties, rail authorities, regulators, and train operating companies.
  • Maintain strong collaborative relationships to support seamless operational flow.

 

Operational Strategy & Governance

  • Contribute to operational strategy development and ensure governance structures are upheld.
  • Support long‑term operational planning and performance optimisation.

Desired Experience & Qualification

Applicants Should Have/Be the Following:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree (Honours) in Logistics Management, Commercial, Engineering, Law, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years’ operational plant or logistics experience.
  • Minimum 5 years’ senior management experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of rail and export operations.
  • Code EB driver’s licence.
  • Knowledge of SAP, and strong proficiency in MS Office and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated leadership, analytical, facilitation, interpersonal, and decision‑making capabilities.
  • Professionalism, initiative, strong coordination skills, and the ability to perform effectively under pressure.
