Mechanic II-IV (Fleet Services)
The City of San AngeloGENERAL PURPOSE Under general supervision, maintains, repairs, and adjusts City vehicles, equipment, and machinery in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Performs preventive maintenance on City vehicles to maximize the effective life cycle of equipment. Diagnoses mechanical and electrical problems on vehicles and equipment; performs maintenance and repairs within the scope of authority and in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures. Performs all phases of basic automotive maintenance, including tune-ups, troubleshooting and repairs, tire repairs, electrical diagnostics, brake work, engine diagnostics, hydraulics, and lubrication. Diagnoses and repairs vehicle component systems, engines, transmissions, power trains, braking systems, and steering systems; uses technical manuals and computer equipment to diagnose and correct vehicle problems. Repairs electrical, fuel supply, brake, air conditioning, and engine cooling systems; performs emergency repairs in the field as required; installs auxiliary and specialized equipment; and verifies equipment meets safety standards before returning it to fleet operations. Performs mandated annual safety inspections for City vehicles. Performs welding tasks, including fabricating and repairing metal parts and components. Orders parts as needed and maintains the shop, yard, and equipment in a clean and orderly condition. Maintains work orders, records, and logs of services performed and general vehicle information. Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents, and injuries. Participates in continuing education and certification opportunities. Provides training and assistance to Fleet Services employees. May assume supervisory duties in the absence of the Supervisor, based on mechanic level and the availability of higher-level mechanics. Completes additional training as required for the assigned mechanic level. Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Regular and timely attendance is required. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE High school diploma or equivalent, along with the required vehicle maintenance experience for the assigned level, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Mechanic Level Required Vehicle Maintenance Experience ASE Certification Requirements Additional Training Mechanic II 2 years Minimum of 2 ASE certifications within 12 months of employment Training above Mechanic I requirements Mechanic III 4 years Minimum of 5 ASE certifications within 18 months of employment Training above Mechanic II requirements Mechanic IV 6 years Minimum of 9 ASE certifications within 18 months of employment Training above Mechanic III requirements SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Supervisory responsibilities are progressive and depend on the mechanic level: Mechanic II: May assume supervisory duties in the absence of the Supervisor, Mechanic III, and Mechanic IV. Mechanic III: May assume supervisory duties in the absence of the Supervisor and Mechanic IV. Mechanic IV: May assume supervisory duties in the absence of the Supervisor. Required Licenses or Certifications Must possess a valid Texas Driver License. A Class A or B Commercial Driver License (CDL) may be required. If a Class A or B CDL is obtained, held, and utilized during employment, the employee will be subject to applicable Department of Transportation (DOT) guidelines and regulations. Applicants with an out-of-state driver license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Must obtain the minimum number of ASE certifications required for the assigned mechanic level within the specified timeframe. Required Knowledge of Federal and state traffic and safety regulations.
