Job Summary: Under general supervision, maintains and repairs all City vehicles and equipment. Work responsibilities extend to providing various welding and fabrication services . Representative Duties/Essential Functions: The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position. Other job functions may be added from time to time. Receive instructions from supervision. Interpret prints, sketches and operating systems. Plan and perform work requiring knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines and auxiliary and mechanical equipment. Operate vehicles and equipment to assist other departments if/when needed, respond to after-hours callouts and assist with snow plowing operations. Inspect and repair improper function of gas, diesel, and mechanical equipment and perform trouble shooting. Diagnose problems with hydraulic systems that are controlled by air, electric, or manual systems. Adjust and make repairs and replace generators, alternators, starters, electronic ignition systems, and lights on mobile equipment and trailers. Make simple and rough repairs to cabs, body, boxes, and chassis. Perform maintenance welding as directed, including cut/burn, fabricating and repairs. Work with vendors, dealers, mobile service trucks and other support staff. Perform routine oil changes, PM and inspections on all city fleet and vehicles. Assist operators with changing cutting edges, adjustments and other maintenance duties. Keep area in clean and orderly condition. All other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications (include valid Driver’s License if required): High School diploma, or equivalent. Two (2) years of accredited schooling in the Automotive or Diesel Field or three (3) years verifiable work experience as a mechanic. CDL Driver’s License (A preferred, B) or ability to obtain within 6 months. DOT Vehicle Inspector Certificate required within six months, training provided. This is a safety sensitive position subject to random cannabis, drug, and alcohol testing. Other Preferred Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of City policies and procedures. Performs work requiring knowledge of mechanical and electrical principles. Reason through and plan work in trouble shooting and repairing internal combustion engines. Use mechanic’s hand tools in repairing internal combustion engines and trucks, tractors, etc. involving close tolerances. Perform work and repairs on automatic transmissions including all passenger cars, trucks, and heavy equipment. Perform work requiring knowledge of electronic fuel injection systems and anti-lock brakes systems. Use of scan tools (engine analyzer) to diagnose problems with electronic injection systems, anti-lock brake systems, and air-bag systems. Install and service emergency equipment on Police, Fire, and Ambulance vehicles. Manage inventory and stock hardware, tools, filters and other to be able to perform repairs. Assist with training staff of safe and efficient operations of vehicle and equipment operations. Must have knowledge of D.O.T. rules, regulations, and inspections.
