Materials Engineering Co-Op
NovelisNovelis is one of the world leaders in aluminum recycling and rolling and a leading sustainable aluminum solutions provider. Driven by our purpose of shaping a sustainable world together, we work alongside our customers to provide innovative solutions to the aerospace, automotive, beverage packaging and specialty markets. Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, Novelis has approximately 13,000 employees in 32 operating facilities on 4 continents. Position Overview The Global Beverage Packaging Technology team, located in Kennesaw, GA, has an opportunity to participate in our Co-op program. The team is seeking a materials engineering Co-op that can join the team from May 2027 to December 2027. This role is responsible for conducting metallurgical investigations of newly developed high recycled content (HRC) beverage end product, across the end manufacturing process, from casting through end conversion. The work will establish full process-microstructure-property-performance relationships and identify key opportunities to improve product performance and manufacturing efficiency. Responsibilities Conduct metallurgical characterization and analysis of advanced aluminum beverage packaging alloys using microstructural, mechanical, and physical property evaluation techniques. Investigate the effects of alloy composition and manufacturing processes, including casting, homogenization, hot rolling, cold rolling, coating, curing, and end making, on final product performance. Develop processing-microstructure-property-performance correlations through experimental testing and data analysis. Identify key process variables and optimization opportunities to improve manufacturing efficiency, product robustness, and commercial viability. Collaborate with research, manufacturing, and product development teams to interpret results and provide technical recommendations. Document findings and communicate results through technical reports and presentations. Minimum qualifications Enrolled in an accredited Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Rising junior, senior, or Master's student with a strong academic record. Basic understanding of materials science fundamentals, including microstructure-property relationships and mechanical behavior of materials. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and data interpretation skills. Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document, summarize, and present technical findings. Preferred qualifications Coursework or project experience in physical metallurgy, materials processing, mechanical behavior, or materials characterization. Familiarity with metallographic sample preparation and characterization techniques such as optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), or electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Experience with mechanical testing methods, including tensile testing, hardness testing, or related material property evaluations. Understanding of metal manufacturing processes such as casting, heat treatment, rolling, forming, or coating operations. Proficiency with data analysis and visualization tools such as Excel, MATLAB, Python, or similar software. Experience designing and executing laboratory experiments and interpreting experimental results. Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a laboratory or research environment. Please note that we are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position.
