Position Snapshot A Material Handler/Laborer is commonly expected to know how to use a spreader bar attachment for moving materials within the warehouse. You will also be expected to make inventory transfers in computer, and will move materials (such as raw materials, finished product, etc.) in warehouse areas using propane or diesel forklift tractor, and various overhead and lifting cranes. Works daily to ensure assigned areas of responsibility are working with risk lowered to ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) specifically in an effort to achieve ZERO HARM so no injuries, illness or negative impact occurs to employees, property, the environment or the community. To perform well in this role, you will need to: Have knowledge of safety equipment and safety procedures for forklift operations Maintain good housekeeping/neat work area while loading and unloading material Possess or be able to obtain a forklift/overhead crane operator certification and be fully functional in their operation Safely operate equipment in a close quartered shipping yard with various materials, trucks, and employees present Use spreader bar attachment to handle various materials in various sizes, shapes and weights Cut and bend tie wire for securing sheets of material Use pneumatic banding machine to band finished material Empty and monitor scrap dumpsters; contacts scrap dealer when needed Move completed materials/product from machine conveyor to appropriate stating area in the warehouse using the propane or diesel forklift tractor Have appropriate computer skills to make entries of products, material and cycle count quantities into the appropriate systems Ability to lift up to 50 lbs Visually checks quality of finished product Must possess a high attention to details, work with production department, and train others as needed Qualifications to be considered for the role: High School diploma or equivalent; ability to complete simple forms and understand simple written instructions. Ability to perform simple arithmetic skills involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals. An equivalent combination of education and work-related experience may be acceptable. A minimum of two (2) years’ forklift and crane operational experience required in heavy material handling and moving responsibilities An equivalent combination of education and work-related experience may be acceptable Physical Demands The physical demands in a heavy manufacturing environment are significantly more strenuous and require a high level of physical fitness and stamina. Workers are frequently required to stand, walk, bend, stoop, crouch, and lift or carry heavy materials—often over 50 pounds—throughout their shift. Tasks may involve operating or working near heavy machinery, using hand and power tools, and performing repetitive motions. Employees must also be able to tolerate exposure to heat, cold, loud noise, and other environmental factors such as dust, vibration, and slippery surfaces. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required, and physical agility, coordination, and situational awareness are critical to performing job duties safely and effectively in an industrial setting. Work Environment The work environment for this position is an industrial manufacturing plant, with employees regularly exposed to physical and environmental challenges. Workers are continuously (70–100% of the time) around moving and potentially dangerous machinery and are subject to loud noise levels that require hearing protection. Frequently (30–70% of the time), they may encounter heat from both weather and industrial processes, as well as cold weather conditions. Occasionally (up to 30% of the time), the environment may include wet or humid conditions, slippery floors or ramps, vibration from equipment, exposure to outside weather, dust, electrical shock hazards, and contact with oil, grease, or solvents.
