Material Handler – Southland Industrial Coatings Washington, LA GENERAL SUMMARY This position is responsible for numerous production-related duties that include, but are not limited to, moving and organizing materials, operating material-handling equipment, following production schedules, and prepping materials. This position will work closely with the Production Supervisor(s) to ensure an organized and efficient flow of materials through the plant while meeting established daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly goals. DESIRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, AND/OR SKILLS Experience operating telehandlers, forklifts, and/or overhead cranes preferred/required based on assigned duties. Prior telehandler experience is strongly preferred , including experience safely lifting, moving, and placing heavy materials in industrial or manufacturing environments. Experience using forklifts required. Experience using cranes preferred. Prior manufacturing experience preferred. High School Diploma or GED Equivalent preferred. Regular and timely attendance is required. Ability to read and follow equipment load charts and manufacturer operating guidelines. Ability to safely operate equipment on uneven terrain, in tight spaces, and around personnel and other equipment. Ability to communicate effectively with ground personnel, signalers, supervisors, and other equipment operators. JOB DUTIES Operate telehandlers, forklifts, overhead cranes, and other material-handling equipment as necessary. Safely drive and maneuver telehandlers across uneven ground, rough terrain, and confined areas. Operate the telescopic boom to lift, move, extend, retract, elevate, and accurately place materials at varying heights and distances. Read and follow telehandler and equipment capacity/load charts to ensure loads remain within safe operating limits. Properly position, balance, and secure loads against the backrest or attachment before transporting materials. Change and utilize appropriate telehandler attachments, including forks, buckets, lifting jibs, or other approved attachments, as required for assigned tasks. Conduct pre-operational inspections of telehandlers, forklifts, cranes, and other equipment before use, including checking tires, brakes, hydraulics, fluid levels, safety devices, and other components. Immediately report damaged, defective, or unsafe equipment to the appropriate Supervisor. Maintain clear communication with ground crews, signalers, Production Supervisor(s), and other personnel through approved hand signals, radios, or other communication methods. Monitor work areas for changing weather conditions, high winds, ground stability, overhead obstructions, power lines, personnel, and other hazards before and during lifting operations. Follow company production and safety procedures. Clean, package, and finish materials after the galvanizing process is complete. Track all materials that are on site, including company stock and customer materials. Keep the yard and materials neat, organized, and accessible. Perform basic routine equipment upkeep and maintain equipment in a clean and safe operating condition. Complete all other reasonable tasks assigned by the Supervisor or General Manager. Communicate with the General Manager and Supervisor(s) as necessary. PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS In order to do the job, the following physical requirements are necessary: Valid driver’s license. Ability to communicate effectively both written and orally is mandatory. Must possess problem-solving and communication skills. Must be team-oriented, motivated, and dependable. Ability to work 10-hour shifts, or until the job is complete, outside in all weather conditions. Ability to multitask and stay focused in a fast-paced work environment. Ability to occasionally move/lift items weighing up to 100 lbs. Effectively and safely utilize ladders, man lifts, telehandlers, forklifts, overhead cranes, and other equipment.
