Marine Superintendent
Trident Navigation LtdTrident is seeking a Marine Superintendent to lead the day-to-day operation of our tug fleet and support the mariners who run it. This is a hands-on leadership role with regular time aboard vessels, at terminals, and alongside crews, as well as office time for planning, documentation, and coordination. Reporting directly to the CEO, you will help ensure our vessels and crews are ready for work, operations run safely and efficiently, and Trident’s safety management practices are followed across the fleet. Company Overview Headquartered in North Vancouver, Trident Navigation Ltd. provides maritime transportation and logistics services throughout the Pacific Northwest. Our growing fleet of tugboats and barges supports customers through towage, barge leasing, warehousing, vessel moorage, and marine transloading. Safety is central to our vessel and shore-based operations. Key Responsibilities Tug Operations Oversee daily tug and barge operations, working with dispatch, Masters, and the shore team to meet customer requirements. Monitor vessel and crew availability, identify operational constraints, and help resolve issues in the field. Visit vessels and job sites regularly to support crews and assess operational performance. Coordinate with maintenance and terminal personnel on vessel readiness, repairs, and operational priorities. Support planning for complex or unusual towing and marine transportation work. Mariner Leadership Provide practical leadership, coaching, and support to Masters and crew members. Help ensure mariners have the qualifications, training, and vessel familiarization required for their assignments. Participate in crew performance discussions, onboarding, and ongoing development. Promote clear communication between vessel crews, dispatch, and shore management. Safety and Compliance Lead the consistent application of Trident’s Safety Management System across tug operations. Conduct vessel visits, safety observations, toolbox talks, and operational reviews. Support audits, inspections, incident investigations, corrective actions, and continuous improvement. Work with the Designated Person and shore management team to address safety concerns raised by crews. Help ensure operations comply with applicable Transport Canada requirements, company procedures, and industry standards. Bring practical experience with ISM principles and safety management into daily field operations. Qualifications Significant experience in tugboat operations, preferably as a tug Master, Port Captain, Marine Superintendent, or in a similar marine leadership role. Strong knowledge of towing, barge handling, crew management, and marine operations in British Columbia. Experience applying a marine Safety Management System; familiarity with the ISM Code is strongly preferred. Working knowledge of applicable Transport Canada requirements and marine occupational health and safety practices. Ability to earn the trust of experienced mariners while setting clear expectations and addressing performance or safety concerns. Strong judgment, communication, and problem-solving skills. Relevant Transport Canada certification and sea-going experience are strong assets. Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel to vessels, terminals, and job sites as needed. Flexibility to respond to operational issues outside regular office hours when required.
