Manager, Corporate EHS and Fleet Safety Risk
Reliance, Inc.The Corporate Risk Manager is a professional-level risk management position responsible for the disciplined management of Reliance’s workers’ compensation, automobile liability, and general liability claims portfolio. Supporting a large, complex enterprise, this role serves as a key internal expert on claims, insurance, reserving, settlement evaluation, and loss-cost control. The successful candidate is a highly analytical, commercially minded claims professional who can independently manage potentially complex and high-exposure matters while holding third-party administrators, insurers, and internal stakeholders accountable for results. Own and actively manage a large portfolio of workers’ compensation, automobile liability, and general liability claims from first notice through closure. Control total claim costs through early intervention, appropriate reserving, settlement negotiation, subrogation, recovery opportunities, and timely claim resolution. Establish claim-management strategy for low- to high-severity, routine to complex, non-litigated, potentially catastrophic and catastrophic claims. Regularly review open claims, reserves, payments, liability exposure, and projected costs; challenge unsupported assumptions and excessive reserves. Directly interact with/hold TPAs, insurance carriers, adjusters, rapid response teams, investigators, and vendors accountable for claim outcomes and service levels. Evaluate settlement opportunities and negotiate from a position of strong factual and financial, understanding. Identify subrogation, contribution and other recovery opportunities and ensure those opportunities are pursued and resolved. Partner with Legal, Finance, Human Resources, Operations, Procurement, and business leaders to mitigate losses and prevent recurrence. Analyze claims data and trends to identify systemic loss drivers, emerging exposures, operational weaknesses, and opportunities to reduce frequency and severity. Prepare claim reviews, loss forecasts, dashboards, and financial analyses for senior leadership. Work with Corporate EHS and Risk Management to support insurance renewals, loss modeling, exposure analysis, collateral requirements, and evaluation of risk-financing alternatives. Partner with Legal to support defense and resolution of litigated claims. Monitor compliance with applicable workers’ compensation, liability, insurance, reporting, and claims-handling requirements. Develop and maintain strong controls, documentation standards, claim-management protocols, vendor performance expectations, and audit processes. Conduct periodic claim audits and performance reviews of TPAs, carriers, and other service providers. Maintain relentless focus on timely closure of claims while balancing financial, operational, employee, stakeholder, and reputational considerations. Educate Operating Group EHS and Fleet Safety Leadership, and implement proactive strategies and systems – in conjunction with Corporate EHS/Fleet. SUPPLEMENTAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Operate as a subject-matter expert rather than an administrative claims coordinator. Demonstrate a “challenge the number” mindset by independently validating reserves, settlement recommendations, and other major cost assumptions. Manage numerous competing priorities simultaneously without losing control of critical dates, exposures, action items, or escalation requirements. Be persistent, fact-driven, and appropriately assertive with adjusters, vendors, and internal stakeholders. Know when to escalate significant exposures and when to independently drive resolution. Translate complex claims and insurance issues into clear business recommendations for executives and non-risk professionals.
