The City of Oxnard’s Public Works Department, Environmental Resources Division, is seeking dependable, safety-conscious, and hardworking Maintenance Worker Trainees (Swamper/Container Repair) to support the City’s refuse and recycling collection operations. Successful candidates will assist collection crews with daily operations, maintain and repair refuse containers, and help ensure the safe and efficient collection and disposal of residential and commercial waste and recyclable materials. The ideal candidate will be a team player who is committed to providing quality service to the community, maintaining a safe working environment, and supporting the efficient operation of the City’s refuse and recycling programs. WHAT YOU’LL DO: As a Maintenance Worker Trainee/Swamper, you will work alongside collection truck drivers to provide timely and efficient refuse and recycling collection services throughout the City of Oxnard. You will assist with the collection of waste and recyclable materials, safely mount and dismount collection vehicles as required, and help ensure collection routes are completed in accordance with established schedules and safety procedures. You will identify and report service issues, communicate collection concerns to the driver, maintain clean and orderly equipment, and provide courteous service to residents and businesses. You will also assist with special collections, the proper disposal of collected materials, and other collection-related duties that support the daily operations of the Public Works Department. Assist the collection truck driver with residential and commercial refuse and recycling collection routes. Collect, move, and return waste and recycling containers to their designated locations. Safely mount and dismount collection vehicles in accordance with established safety procedures. Identify and report blocked access, overflowing containers, prohibited materials, damaged containers, and other collection service issues. Maintain awareness of pedestrians, traffic, parked vehicles, and other hazards along collection routes. Communicate with the driver regarding route progress, unsafe conditions, missed pickups, and service concerns. Assist with maintaining clean and orderly collection vehicles and equipment. Perform physically demanding outdoor work in varying weather conditions while following established safety procedures. Provide courteous and professional service to residents and businesses. PAYROLL/CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Maintenance Technician DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This classification is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker in that it provides semi-skilled or skilled general maintenance work. SUPERVISION EXERCISED/ SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Receives close supervision and specific direction regarding assignments and deadlines. WORK SCHEDULE: Employees generally work a Monday through Saturday 4/10 schedule with days and hours of the week varying depending on assignment. Schedules are subject to change depending on operational needs. Depending on the work assignment, staff may be assigned to a shift that is outside the standard work hours. In addition, this position may be required to be available to work additional hours in response to peaks in workloads and changes in department needs.
