The City of Roanoke is currently seeking an energetic, dedicated team player to fill a vacant Sign Marking Maintenance Technician Level II position in our Public Works/ Transportation Division/ Traffic Sign Shop.
Works with a crew of 2 to 6 employees in the field applying thermal plastics, the layout of new pavement markings for Stop bars, Crosswalks, Directional arrows, and pre-formed worded legends. Must be able to maneuver a small trailer towed behind a truck. Experience operating a thermal plastic machine and igniting thermal heating units is required. Responsibilities also include working with the long line striping crew, signing installation crew, and completing daily logs of work performed. Must be able to work during adverse weather conditions (hot/cold/rain/snow). Will be on call for emergency barricade duties and special events on a rotating schedule. The position is required to work during snow events. Class B CDL is required within six (6) months of hire. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 2-3 years experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

SUMMARY
Performs skilled work in the maintenance of facilities and/or equipment and in the operation of motorized equipment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. • Discuss job requirements and receives detailed instructions from supervisor • Inspects sign and marking installations in progress to ensure conformance with current MUTCD standards • Requisitions necessary equipment and materials in daily operation • Maintains accurate shop daily operation log sheets and checklists using VueWorks system • Working with a crew of 1-6 people and be able to listen to and follow instructions given • Sets up work zones as needed to ensure according to the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual • Installs and repairs traffic signs and pavement marking throughout the City • Assists crew with laying down hot applied thermoplastic • Installs, repairs, and maintains street paining such as double yellow and skips • Assists the sign fabricator with making signs • Keeps work order records using the Transportation current work order VueWorks system • Assists the shop supervisor during emergency events and work with police, fire/EMS and other governmental functions • Participates in the City of Roanoke snow removal operations •

QUALIFICATIONS
A valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. One to three years of related work experience and training in the construction and maintenance of traffic markings and signs in the right of way. Must have a CDL B or obtain within twelve (12) months of hire. Some experience working in or around traffic.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one to three years related experience and/or training in trades area assigned; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Depending on area of assignment, may require possession of an appropriate class A, B or C commercial driver's license with Hazardous Material and tank endorsement. May require Playground Inspection Certification to be acquired after hire. May require journey-level licensure in an area of skilled trades.
