Maintenance, Grounds and Courier Assistant
Schenectady City School DistrictDistinguishing Features of the Class : This is semi-skilled work involving responsibility for performing a wide variety of building and grounds maintenance and manual labor tasks. The incumbent in this position drives a variety of vehicles in conjunction with responsibilities and performs courier tasks. Work is performed under the general supervision of a superior in accordance with established practices. General supervision may be exercised over subordinate personnel. Does related work as required. Typical Work Activities and Expectations : Washes, paints and repairs furniture, fixtures, equipment, walls, ceilings, windows, blinds, tiles and related structures; Makes minor plumbing, electrical and carpentry repairs, including threading and cutting pipe, repairing and replacing bathroom fixtures, and repairing and changing light bulbs, ballasts and fixtures; Assists in cleaning and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment; Performs manual labor related to tasks; Prepares room set-ups and knock-downs according to room schedules; Acts as a substitute custodian; Repairs and installs fencing, playground equipment, athletic structures, and other outdoor fixtures; Builds forms and mixes mortar for concrete work; Mows and rakes lawns, trims shrubs and trees, and performs related grounds work; Performs a variety of snow and ice removal work, including operating a plow, and shoveling sidewalks and steps; Loads and unloads trucks; Routinely drives motor vehicles, including automobiles, trucks, and vans; Makes deliveries throughout district and surrounding area to individuals, schools, businesses, post office, and banks; Performs banking transactions, including deposits, in connection with courier work; Creates and maintains written or computer records and reports relative to assigned tasks; Performs a variety of related work as required. Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics and Key Qualities : Working knowledge of building maintenance practices; Working knowledge of general· mechanics, tools and equipment usage, terminology and safety precautions, and have a mechanical aptitude; Keep an inventory of all tools and materials used; Ability to follow oral and written instructions; Ability to drive a variety of vehicles and operate a variety of equipment for work related tasks; Ability to work both alone and as part of a team; Ability to lift 75 lbs; Ability to climb ladders and work at heights of 40 feet; Ability to twist, bend and lift to perform manual labor; and Ability to work outside in extreme weather conditions. Job Qualifications Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; and One year of experience in building maintenance, trade or grounds work or a combination thereof. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: At the time of appointment and throughout tenure of appointment, must have and maintain a New York State Motor vehicle Operator’s license (Class 5).
