Housatonic Railroad CompanyJob Overview Join our dynamic team as a Locomotive Engineer, where you will be at the forefront of rail operations, ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable movement of freight. As a vital member of our team, you will be responsible for the safe operation of locomotives, ensuring timely deliveries and upholding transportation safety regulations. Duties Operate locomotives in accordance with train operation regulations and rail track rules procedures, maintaining smooth and safe train movements. Participate actively in safety training programs as part of ongoing safety practice, promoting a culture of safety awareness among team members. Communicate effectively with dispatchers and other crew members to coordinate train movements, timetable and cargo departure, and respond promptly to operational updates or emergencies. Use personal protective equipment (PPE) consistently and correctly during all phases of train operation to safeguard health and safety. Comply with rail regulatory requirements, operating rules, including air brake systems checks, train track rules procedures, and heavy equipment operation standards to ensure legal and safe operations. Maintain accurate records of cars handled, report car placements in a timely manner and track safety conditions encountered. Maintain time sheets for themselves and all members of the crew legibly and complete. Time sheet must be submitted to the proper official prior to going off duty. License/Certifications Drivers License - Must be 18 years or older Must have 49CFR240 qualifications High School Education or GED Skills Strong mechanical knowledge paired with proficiency in using hand tools for routine locomotive maintenance checks. Must pass a mandatory drug/alcohol test. Extensive understanding of train operations, including air brake systems, hazardous materials regulations, and rail transportation protocols. Knowledge of transportation safety regulations, train operation regulations, and rail regulatory compliance standards essential for safe conduct. Ability to operate heavy equipment safely within complex environments while adhering to all safety training program participation requirements. Excellent communication skills for effective coordination with dispatchers, crew members, and emergency responders. Commitment to safety protocol adherence at all times, ensuring personal protective equipment (PPE) use is consistent and proper during operations.
