Job Summary The Inventory Control Specialist is responsible for maintaining accurate inventory records for lumber, panels, and related building materials within the warehouse and yard. This position supports daily operations by monitoring stock levels, verifying incoming and outgoing materials, conducting inventory counts, and ensuring inventory accuracy in the company’s inventory management system. The role works closely with purchasing, shipping, receiving, and sales teams to ensure product availability and minimize inventory discrepancies. Key Responsibilities Inventory Management Maintain accurate inventory records for lumber, plywood, panels, and related products. Perform daily inventory checks and cycle counts to ensure stock accuracy. Investigate and resolve inventory discrepancies, shortages, and overages. Monitor inventory levels and notify management when stock levels are low or excessive. Maintain proper product identification including tags, labels, and location assignments. Shipping & Receiving Support Verify quantities and product types for incoming shipments against purchase orders. Confirm outbound shipments match sales orders and shipping documentation. Record all inventory movements accurately in the inventory management system. Assist with material transfers between warehouse locations or yard areas. Documentation & Reporting Maintain accurate records of receipts, shipments, adjustments, and transfers. Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly inventory reports. Track damaged, returned, or unsellable materials and coordinate with management on disposition. Ensure all inventory documentation is properly filed and maintained. Yard & Warehouse Coordination Work with warehouse personnel to ensure proper storage and organization of materials. Assist with locating materials for orders or cycle counts. Ensure inventory locations remain organized and accessible. Support periodic physical inventory counts and audits. Safety & Compliance Follow company safety procedures and warehouse policies. Ensure inventory storage practices comply with safety standards. Report safety hazards or damaged materials to supervisors. Qualifications Education & Experience High school diploma or equivalent required. 1–3 years of inventory control, warehouse, or logistics experience preferred. Experience in building materials or lumber industry preferred. Skills & Competencies Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Basic math and data entry skills. Ability to use inventory management or ERP systems. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel or similar software preferred. Ability to work in both office and outdoor yard environments. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Physical Requirements Ability to work in warehouse and outdoor yard conditions. Ability to walk the yard and warehouse frequently. Ability to lift up to 30–50 lbs occasionally. Ability to climb stairs or ladders when necessary. Work Environment Combination of office, warehouse, and outdoor lumber yard environment. Exposure to weather conditions, dust, and heavy equipment. Regular interaction with forklift operators, warehouse staff, and drivers.
