The Indirect Tax Manager is responsible for the strategic leadership, administration, compliance, audit defense, and process improvement of all indirect tax activities across the organization. This role ensures compliance with state and local property, sales and use tax laws, manages tax registrations and filings across multiple jurisdictions, supports acquisitions and business expansions, and serves as the organization's subject matter expert for indirect taxation. The position partners closely with Accounting, Purchasing, Accounts Payable, Sales, IT, Legal, and external tax advisors to minimize tax exposure, maximize exemptions, and reduce audit risk while maintaining strong internal controls. Essential Responsibilities Compliance & Reporting Manage all Real and Personal Property Tax Renditions, valuation challenges, and tracking across the organization. Oversee preparation and filing of sales and use tax returns in all required jurisdictions. Manage exemption certificates and resale certificates. Review taxability of products, services, freight, warranties, installation activities, and construction-related transactions. Ensure compliance with nexus laws and economic nexus requirements. Monitor changing state and local tax regulations. Coordinate tax registrations, renewals, and business licenses as needed. Audit Management Lead all property, sales and use tax audits. Respond to auditor requests and information inquiries. Prepare documentation supporting tax positions. Negotiate audit findings and assessments. Coordinate external tax advisors when necessary. Risk Management Identify indirect tax exposures across operating companies. Recommend and implement corrective actions. Conduct periodic internal compliance reviews. Develop policies and procedures to strengthen tax compliance controls. Accounting & Financial Support Reconcile sales tax payable and use tax accrual accounts. Assist with month-end and year-end tax-related reconciliations. Support external financial statement audits. Participate in due diligence for acquisitions and business reorganizations. Purchasing & Accounts Payable Oversight Review vendor invoices for proper tax treatment. Establish processes for accruing and remitting use tax. Train AP personnel regarding taxable purchases and exemptions. Work with Purchasing to optimize tax compliance during procurement activities. Technology & Process Improvement Evaluate and implement tax automation solutions. Support ERP integrations and tax engine implementations. Work with IT to develop automated tax reporting solutions. Improve tax reporting efficiency and accuracy. Business Partnership Provide advisory support to Business Development, Sales, Operations, Construction, Manufacturing, and Purchasing teams. Review contracts and transactions for indirect tax implications. Assist management with tax planning opportunities. Qualifications Education Required: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or Business Administration Preferred: Master's in Taxation (MST) CPA CMI (Certified Member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation) Experience Required: 7+ years of indirect tax experience Multi-state property, sales and use tax compliance experience Experience managing tax audits Preferred: Manufacturing experience Construction industry experience Multi-entity organization experience ERP experience (Dynamics 365 Business Central, Oracle, SAP, JD Edwards, NetSuite, etc.) Technical Skills Advanced Excel Tax research platforms Sales tax automation software (Avalara, Vertex, Sovos, Thomson Reuters) Strong accounting knowledge Competencies Strong analytical ability Attention to detail Project management Strategic thinking Business partnership mindset Leadership and influence Effective written and verbal communication Audit defense expertise
