Every night FedEx turns Memphis International into one of the busiest cargo airports on the planet, and that superhub is only part of the story. Memphis also has a major Mississippi River port, five Class I railroads with large intermodal yards, and miles of distribution centers stretching down Lamar Avenue and spilling over into Southaven and Olive Branch in Mississippi. so much freight that isn't headed for the city itself. Seen from a hotshot cab, Memphis is a crossroads. I-40 crosses the Hernando de Soto Bridge into Arkansas toward Little Rock and Dallas. I-55 runs north through Arkansas and the Missouri Bootheel to St. Louis and south through Mississippi to Jackson and New Orleans, while I-22 cuts southeast to Birmingham. The Delta farm belt around the city grows cotton, soybeans and rice, so ag equipment and parts move out of dealers across the Mid-South, and the warehouses keep shipping racking, forklifts and conveyor sections between sites. Summers are humid enough that you'll sweat through a strap check by ten in the morning, and winter brings the occasional ice storm that makes the bridge approaches treacherous. Leave room in your plans for Lamar Avenue, which is slow, truck-heavy and best avoided at shift change. Mid-South drivers living in Memphis or DeSoto County can put in for the job below. Pay is a percentage of gross, not a per-mile rate; active drivers average $9,000 weekly gross. No CDL is needed for the pickup position, and the company provides the truck.
