Tulsa is about as far inland as you can get and still have a working port. The Tulsa Port of Catoosa, at the head of the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System, sends barges down to the Mississippi, and the industrial parks around it handle steel, fabricated equipment and bulk goods that often need a truck for the last leg. Across town, the airline maintenance base and the aerospace shops

near the airport add a different kind of freight: crated parts, tooling and machinery that suit a hotshot better than a dry van. Highways here fan out in useful directions. I-44 follows the Will Rogers Turnpike northeast to Joplin and Springfield, then on toward St. Louis; the Turner Turnpike heads to Oklahoma City; US-75 runs north to Bartlesville and Kansas; and US-412 cuts east toward the poultry country of northwest Arkansas. The terrain softens into Ozark foothills east of town, with some rolling grades but nothing that troubles a well-loaded gooseneck. Oil equipment still moves too, a reminder of the decades Tulsa called itself the oil capital of the world. Living in Tulsa also puts you within a day's drive of Kansas City, Dallas and Little Rock, so the home week tends to begin without a long empty leg. Our pickup seat doesn't call for a CDL, and the truck is ours, not yours to buy. If you'd like to see whether the fit is right, start with the short form here. Pay is a percentage of gross, not a per-mile rate; active drivers average $9,000 weekly gross. No CDL is needed for the pickup position, and the company provides the truck.
