Overview The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel-powered trucks, trailers, and commercial vehicles while performing preventive maintenance and ensuring all equipment operates safely and efficiently. Responsibilities include servicing engines, transmissions, brakes, steering and suspension, fuel, cooling, air, hydraulic, and electrical systems; using diagnostic equipment to identify and repair faults; performing DOT/BIT inspections; repairing tires, wheel ends, and wheel bearings; responding to roadside service calls; completing accurate repair documentation; and maintaining a clean, safe work environment. The position requires strong mechanical aptitude, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, compliance with all safety regulations, and flexibility to work overtime, weekends, and emergency service calls as needed. Duties Perform comprehensive diagnostics and repairs on diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, brakes, suspensions, and electrical systems across various heavy equipment and vehicles. Conduct routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tire services, alignment checks, and fluid replacements to ensure optimal operation. Utilize schematics and technical manuals to troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical issues accurately. Fabricate parts or modify existing components using welding, cutting tools, and fabrication techniques to meet specific repair needs. Operate heavy machinery including excavators, cranes, forklifts, and other industrial equipment safely and efficiently during repair or maintenance procedures. Inspect vehicles and equipment for safety compliance; perform air brake tests, shocks & struts replacements, HVAC servicing, and wheel alignments. Maintain detailed service records, complete repair reports, and ensure all work adheres to safety standards and manufacturer specifications. Skills Strong mechanical knowledge of diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, suspension systems, and vehicle electrical systems. Skilled in automotive diagnostics using advanced tools; adept at reading schematics for troubleshooting complex issues. Proficient with hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and fabrication techniques necessary for custom repairs. Experience operating heavy equipment such as excavators, cranes, forklifts, or tractor-trailers; familiarity with heavy machinery operation protocols. Knowledge of vehicle systems including air brakes, HVAC systems, tire service procedures, shocks & struts replacement. Ability to perform heavy lifting safely; excellent attention to detail in maintenance tasks; strong customer service skills when interacting with clients or team members.
