Reports To: Transportation Supervisor Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited high school with course work in auto mechanics, experience in diagnosing and performing repair work and preventive maintenance on fleet vehicles and heavy equipment, ability to weld and fabricate metals, experience ordering and maintaining an inventory of parts and supplies, or any equivalent combination of education and experience to provide the following critical knowledge, abilities, and skills preferred. CDL Class B with P and S endorsement driver’s license is required. Must maintain a Tennessee Department of Safety Training Card. Purpose Statement: Employees in this classification perform a variety of activities associated with the repair and maintenance of school buses and other county owned vehicles and equipment. Under general supervision, incumbents primarily perform routine preventive maintenance, safety inspections, and repair work on all Hawkins County owned school buses. Incumbents troubleshoot and diagnose vehicle malfunctions, procure parts and supplies necessary to perform needed repairs, and rebuild or fabricate parts when required. Thorough knowledge and considerable experience in heavy equipment repair and maintenance is required. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Supervise and assist mechanics in the repair and maintenance of school buses and other county-owned vehicles Responsible for all routine preventive maintenance procedures, safety procedures, inspections and repair work Troubleshoot and diagnose vehicle malfunctions Maintain accurate inventory of parts, procure parts and supplies when necessary Knowledge and experience in heavy equipment repair and maintenance Schedule daily activity to be performed by the shop mechanics Rebuild and fabricate parts when necessary to repair equipment Conduct safety inspections of fleet vehicles to ensure they are in proper working order Order parts and supplies as needed Maintains all records for the cost of repairs, operating inventories and purchasing requisitions Assist in delivering buses for sub routes Check equipment to make sure required repair work was performed correctly Clean and maintain the shop to comply with safety regulations Replace glass window panels and seat covers on school buses Pick up and deliver parts when necessary Perform repairs on school buses on the road in the event of a break-down or malfunction Regular and predictable attendance is a core requirement of this position. Regular, effective interpersonal communication with team members and stakeholders is required. Other duties as assigned to ensure the success of Hawkins County Schools and safety of all students and staff. Capacity and Ability Requirements: The usual job demands require the following physical requirements: some lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, and physical dexterity. In addition, employees in this role must maintain a valid Tennessee driver’s license. Terms of Employment: Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the district’s approved compensation plan. The length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the district. Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Hawkins County School Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
