Job Overview
The United States Postal Service is seeking a dedicated and physically fit Freight Handler to join our high volume bulk mail and logistics network. In this crucial position, you will manage the heavy processing and physical routing of large freight shipments, mail containers, and bulk cargo arriving at our major distribution centers. This role demands exceptional physical endurance,
...
an uncompromised commitment to workplace safety, and a passion for teamwork. Your focus and efficiency will keep regional supply chains fluid and ensure millions of pieces of cargo arrive safely at their next destinations.
Key Responsibilities
• Load and unload heavy bulk mail containers, pallets, and loose cargo from commercial trucks and rail cars
• Break down incoming freight shipments and sort individual items by tracking codes, weight classes, and delivery zones
• Maneuver and position massive rolling containers and staging pallets safely throughout the warehouse facility
• Scan freight barcodes and log shipment tracking numbers into our digital inventory database with strict accuracy
• Verify freight manifest documentation to confirm that quantities match incoming and outgoing cargo loads
• Secure unpalletized cargo and apply safety wrapping to outgoing freight to prevent shifting or damage during transport
What Success Looks Like
Success as a Freight Handler means mastering the balance between speed and absolute safety. Top performers keep up with rigorous unloading schedules without compromising safe lifting protocols or damaging fragile shipments. You will truly excel here by maintaining situational awareness on a bustling loading dock, working seamlessly with truck drivers, and stepping up to help your crew clear unexpected backlogs during peak shipping seasons.
Requirements and Qualifications
• Must be a United States citizen or a lawful permanent resident alien
• Must be at least eighteen years old or sixteen years old with a high school diploma
• Ability to pass a formal background check, mandatory drug screening, and physical fitness assessment
• Physical capability to lift up to seventy pounds repeatedly and spend an entire shift walking, pushing, and pulling heavy cargo
• Basic reading and writing fluency in English to quickly decode complex cargo labels, manifests, and safety signage
• Willingness to work a flexible schedule that includes overnight shifts, early mornings, weekends, and holidays
Benefits
• Highly competitive hourly wages with regular built in step increases and ample overtime potential
• Comprehensive federal employee health, dental, and vision insurance options for you and your dependents
• Enrollment in the federal employee retirement system and matching thrift savings account programs
• Generous paid leave accrual including personal vacation days and job protected sick leave
• Paid on the job safety training, forklift certifications, and federal holiday pay from your first day
• A stable career path with extensive internal bidding rights for leadership and logistics specialist roles
