Freight Broker We are seeking an experienced Freight Broker / Brokerage Lead to help build and grow our internal freight brokerage operation. This is a hands-on role for someone who can cover loads, develop carrier relationships, negotiate rates, and build a profitable book of business—while also creating the processes and team structure needed to scale. This is not simply another broker seat at a large brokerage. We are looking for someone who wants ownership, responsibility, and the opportunity to build a brokerage function and eventually lead the team. Key Responsibilities Build and manage a profitable book of produce and refrigerated freight . Source, develop, and maintain relationships with carriers and owner-operators, with a strong emphasis on reefer capacity . Negotiate competitive carrier rates while protecting margins and service levels. Work closely with produce buyers and freight coordinators to ensure loads are covered efficiently and on time. Manage the full brokerage cycle, including quoting, booking, dispatching, track & trace, problem resolution, documentation, and billing . Monitor loads from pickup through delivery and proactively resolve delays, temperature issues, missed appointments, and other service exceptions. Develop a dependable carrier network capable of supporting seasonal and fluctuating produce volumes. Track brokerage performance, including gross margin, margin per load, carrier performance, on-time pickup/delivery, and load coverage . Build the Brokerage Operation A major part of this position is helping us create a scalable brokerage operation. You will: Learn and evaluate our existing freight processes and identify opportunities for improvement. Develop brokerage SOPs, scripts, checklists, workflows, and operating procedures . Create a practical freight brokerage training manual and playbook. Establish consistent processes for carrier sourcing, rate negotiation, load coverage, tracking, documentation, and issue resolution. Help define future Junior Broker and Carrier Sales positions. Train and mentor new brokerage employees as the department grows. Help establish KPIs and accountability standards for the brokerage team. What We're Looking For 3+ years of freight brokerage or carrier sales experience. Experience with reefer, produce, food, or other temperature-controlled freight strongly preferred. Strong understanding of the complete freight brokerage lifecycle. Proven ability to source carriers, negotiate rates, cover difficult loads, and maintain margins. Comfortable working the phones and developing relationships with carriers and owner-operators. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to react quickly when loads do not go according to plan. Detail-oriented, with an understanding of the importance of temperature requirements, appointment times, documentation, and product integrity. Self-directed and comfortable working in an entrepreneurial environment. Interested in building processes, developing people, and taking on increasing leadership responsibility. Growth Opportunity The right person will initially be very hands-on— booking trucks, negotiating rates, covering loads, and solving daily freight problems. As the brokerage operation grows, this position is expected to develop into a Brokerage Manager / Head of Freight role, with brokers and carrier sales representatives reporting underneath you. We're looking for someone who doesn't just want to cover loads . We want someone who wants to build the operation that covers them.
