ConfidentialForklift & Recycling Equipment Mechanic Company: Wilkinson Gary Iron and Metal Department: Operations / Maintenance Reports To: Yard Manager Employment Type: Full-time (45–50 hours per week) Pay: $16–$18 per hour Position Summary Wilkinson Gary Iron and Metal is seeking a skilled Forklift and Recycling Equipment Mechanic to keep our yard and processing equipment running safely and reliably. You will diagnose, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on our forklifts and metal recycling equipment to minimize downtime and keep material moving through the yard. Key Responsibilities Perform routine preventive maintenance on forklifts, including fluid and filter changes, greasing, inspections, and tire, fork, mast, and chain service. Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and drivetrain problems on forklifts (all internal combustion). Maintain and repair recycling and processing equipment such as balers, shears, shredders, granulators and wire choppers, conveyors, magnets, and material handlers. Troubleshoot hydraulic systems, including pumps, cylinders, valves, hoses, and fittings. Respond promptly to breakdowns and make field repairs in the yard when equipment cannot be moved. Complete daily and periodic equipment inspections and flag unsafe equipment for removal from service. Keep accurate maintenance records, including work orders, repair history, parts used, and hours or mileage. Order and track parts, tools, and supplies; maintain an organized shop and parts inventory. Recommend repair-versus-replace decisions and identify recurring problems to reduce repeat failures. Support the fleet and fuel management and maintenance tracking systems by entering data accurately and on time. Follow all safety procedures, including lockout/tagout, hot work, confined space, and PPE requirements. Required Qualifications 2+ years of experience repairing forklifts, heavy equipment, or industrial machinery. Strong working knowledge of hydraulics, diesel and/or LP gas engines, and electrical systems. Ability to read schematics, manuals, and parts diagrams. Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple repairs. Valid driver's license and a clean driving record. Preferred Qualifications Experience in metal recycling, steel mill, or heavy industrial environments. Technical school training or certification in diesel, heavy equipment, or industrial maintenance. Forklift operator certification. Experience with maintenance software or computerized work order systems. Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus. Physical Requirements and Work Environment Work performed in both a shop and an outdoor metal recycling yard, in all weather conditions, including heat. Regularly lift 50+ lbs and occasionally more with assistance. Frequent standing, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and working in confined or elevated positions. Exposure to noise, dust, grease, and heavy moving equipment. Must wear required PPE, including steel-toe boots, hard hat, gloves, hearing and eye protection, and high-visibility clothing.
