Job Description: Forklift Operator Position Summary
The Forklift Operator is responsible for safely operating powered industrial trucks to move, locate, stack, load, unload, and transport materials throughout the warehouse, yard, or production facility. This position plays a key role in maintaining efficient operations while adhering to all company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Operate forklifts and other powered industrial equipment safely and efficiently.
• Load and unload trucks, trailers, and containers.
• Transport raw materials, finished products, and inventory throughout the facility.
• Stack and store materials in designated storage areas.
• Perform daily pre-shift inspections of forklifts and report any mechanical or safety issues.
• Maintain accurate inventory movement using warehouse management systems, scanners, or shipping documents.
• Assist with receiving, shipping, inventory counts, and stock rotation.
• Keep work areas clean, organized, and free of hazards.
• Follow all OSHA regulations, company safety procedures, and operational guidelines.
• Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
• Assist with general warehouse duties as assigned.
Qualifications
• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Previous forklift operating experience preferred.
• Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced warehouse or outdoor environment.
• Basic math and reading skills.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to workplace safety.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Reliable attendance and punctuality required.
Physical Requirements
• Frequently stand, walk, bend, reach, and climb.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to sit and operate equipment for extended periods.
• Ability to work in varying temperatures and weather conditions if working outdoors.
Work Environment
• Warehouse, distribution center, manufacturing facility, or outdoor yard.
• Exposure to moving machinery, loud noises, dust, and changing temperatures.
• Overtime and weekend work may be required based on business needs.
Required Certifications (Florida)
Florida does not require a state-issued forklift operator license or certification. However, federal OSHA regulations require that all forklift operators receive employer-approved training, practical instruction, and a hands-on performance evaluation before operating a powered industrial truck independently. Employers must maintain documentation certifying the operator has successfully completed the required training and evaluation. Operators must also be re-evaluated at least once every three years, or sooner if required due to an accident, unsafe operation, or changes in equipment or workplace conditions.
Preferred Certifications
• OSHA-compliant Powered Industrial Truck (Forklift) Training
• Experience operating sit-down, stand-up, reach, clamp, cherry picker, or pallet jack equipment (as applicable)
