Forklift Operator Job Overview Rockwood Sustainable Solutions is looking for a dependable and safety-focused Forklift Operator to join our team. This position plays an important role in keeping our yard and recycling operations running efficiently by safely moving, loading, unloading, and organizing materials. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in an outdoor industrial environment around trucks, heavy equipment, recycling materials, dust, mud, and changing weather conditions. You should be able to work independently, communicate well with the team, and take pride in keeping your assigned work area safe, clean, and organized. This is a hands-on position where attention to safety, awareness of your surroundings, and reliable equipment operation are essential. Key Responsibilities Safely operate forklifts, skid steers, loaders, and other material-handling equipment as assigned. Load and unload trucks, trailers, containers, and other equipment. Move, stage, sort, and organize recyclable materials throughout the yard. Load and prepare materials for processing, shipment, or movement to other areas of the facility. Safely handle pallets, bins, carts, recycling materials, and other heavy or oversized materials. Work around trucks, excavators, loaders, compactors, and other heavy equipment while maintaining constant awareness of your surroundings. Follow directions from supervisors and communicate effectively with drivers, equipment operators, and other team members. Assist with keeping the yard, loading areas, and assigned work zones clean, organized, and free of hazards. Perform daily equipment inspections and report mechanical problems, damage, or unsafe conditions to a supervisor. Follow all Rockwood safety procedures and applicable OSHA requirements. Properly secure and handle materials to prevent damage, spills, or unsafe conditions. Assist with general yard and recycling operations as needed. Maintain a productive work pace while prioritizing safety and proper material handling. Perform other duties as assigned by management. Qualifications Previous forklift experience required. Experience operating heavy equipment is a plus. Ability to safely operate a forklift in an outdoor industrial environment. Ability to work around moving trucks and heavy equipment. Strong awareness of surroundings and commitment to safe work practices. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Good communication and teamwork skills. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Reliable attendance and dependable work habits. Ability to work in outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, rain, dust, and mud. Ability to safely lift, carry, push, and pull materials as required. Previous recycling, waste, construction, manufacturing, or industrial experience is a plus. Physical & Work Environment This position is primarily performed in an outdoor recycling and industrial yard environment . Employees may be exposed to dust, dirt, mud, noise, changing weather conditions, and heavy equipment throughout the workday. The Forklift Operator must be able to: Sit and operate equipment for extended periods. Safely enter and exit equipment. Walk throughout the yard and work areas. Bend, stoop, climb, and reach as needed. Lift and move materials when required. Work safely in areas with heavy truck and equipment traffic. Remain alert and focused throughout the workday. Safety Expectations Safety is a core responsibility of every Rockwood employee. Forklift Operators are expected to: Follow all company safety policies and procedures. Conduct required pre-shift equipment inspections. Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE). Maintain safe operating speeds and distances. Never operate equipment while impaired or distracted. Report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, spills, and safety concerns immediately.
