SUMMARY The Forklift Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and safe operation of material handling equipment throughout Abbyland Foods facilities. This includes forklifts, electric pallet jacks, pallet trucks, reach trucks, scissor lifts, floor scrubbers, battery charging systems, and other powered industrial equipment. The position plays a critical role in minimizing equipment downtime, supporting production and warehouse operations, and ensuring compliance with safety, food safety, and regulatory requirements. The Forklift Mechanic must demonstrate strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills while maintaining a safe and organized work environment. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The essential duties for this job include the following but other duties may be assigned. Perform preventive maintenance (PM) inspections and services on powered industrial equipment according to established schedules. Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, steering, brake, fuel, and drive system failures. Troubleshoot battery-powered and propane-powered forklifts and material handling equipment. Inspect equipment for safety concerns and remove unsafe equipment from service as necessary. Complete emergency repairs to minimize operational downtime. Repair and maintain floor scrubbers, pallet jacks, high lifts, and related warehouse equipment. EDUCATION High school or general education degree (GED) required. Associate’s degree in a related discipline form a two-year college or technical school strongly desired. EXPERIENCE Two years’ related experience or training. An equivalent combination of education, experience and training may be considered. Preferred: Experience in food manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, or industrial environments. Experience with Raymond, Crown, Toyota, Hyster, Yale, Caterpillar, or similar equipment. Strong mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and troubleshooting skills. Ability to read schematics, service manuals, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation. Understanding of powered industrial truck safety regulations. Knowledge of battery systems, charging systems, and propane fuel systems. Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and testing instruments. Ability to prioritize multiple repairs in a fast-paced environment. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Basic computer skills for maintenance tracking and work orders.
