Role Description The Fleet Mechanic is a full-time, on-site role based in the Greater Chicago Area. This position is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing transit vehicles and related equipment to ensure safe, reliable operation. Daily tasks include performing scheduled and preventive maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues, and documenting all work in maintenance systems. The Fleet Mechanic will work with heavy equipment components such as engines, brakes, suspensions, and HVAC systems, following company and regulatory safety standards. The role also involves collaborating with operations staff to prioritize repairs, supporting vehicle readiness for service, and maintaining a clean and organized work environment. Qualifications Demonstrated skills in maintenance, preventive maintenance, and maintenance & repair of fleet vehicles. Experience working with heavy equipment, including diesel and gasoline-powered transit vehicles. Strong troubleshooting abilities for mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems. Knowledge of safety practices, tools, and diagnostic equipment used in fleet maintenance. High school diploma or equivalent; vocational or technical training in automotive or diesel technology preferred. Prior experience as a fleet, diesel, or automotive mechanic in transit or commercial vehicle environments is beneficial. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, work orders, and schematics. Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record; ability to obtain a CDL with appropriate endorsements as required. Capacity to lift and move heavy parts, work in varying weather conditions, and stand for extended periods. Commitment to safety, reliability, and teamwork in a diverse, inclusive work environment.
