Director of Fleet, Safety & Damage Prevention Department: Operations Reports To: Executive Leadership Classification: Full-Time, Exempt Location: SouthernTier Telecommunications Position Summary The Director of Fleet, Safety & Damage Prevention is responsible for the leadership and overall performance of the company's Fleet, Safety, and Damage Prevention functions. The primary long-term focus of this position is the strategic management of SouthernTier Telecommunications' fleet operations. During an initial transition period, the Director will also have direct, hands-on responsibility for Safety and Damage Prevention activities while the company develops and/or fills dedicated management positions for those functions. As Safety and Damage Prevention Managers are established, the Director's role will transition from performing the day-to-day responsibilities of those departments to leading, managing, and holding the managers of those departments accountable for results. The Director will ultimately provide leadership across all three areas—Fleet, Safety, and Damage Prevention—while ensuring each department operates effectively, consistently, and in alignment with company expectations. This position requires a strong operational leader with experience in fleet management, construction safety, damage prevention, leadership development, and accountability. Primary Responsibilities Fleet Management – Primary Ongoing Responsibility The Director will maintain direct leadership and oversight of the company's fleet operations. Responsibilities include: ● Direct and oversee the company's vehicle and equipment fleet . ● Develop and manage preventive maintenance and inspection programs. ● Ensure company vehicles and equipment are safe, reliable, properly maintained, and available to support field operations. ● Manage vehicle repairs, maintenance, inspections, registrations, insurance documentation, and replacement schedules. ● Monitor vehicle downtime and ensure repairs are completed efficiently. ● Develop vehicle replacement and lifecycle plans based on age, mileage, condition, utilization, repair history, and operational needs . ● Monitor fleet expenses, including fuel, repairs, maintenance, rentals, and replacement costs. ● Evaluate fleet utilization and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce costs. ● Manage relationships with dealerships, repair facilities, towing companies, rental companies, and other fleet vendors. ● Assist executive leadership with fleet budgeting, forecasting, and capital planning. ● Establish standards for vehicle assignment, transfer, inspection, return, and disposal. ● Maintain accurate fleet records and reporting. ● Utilize Samsara and other fleet technology to monitor vehicle utilization, maintenance needs, and driver performance. ● Develop and track fleet KPIs and report results to executive leadership. Safety – Initial Direct Responsibility During the initial transition period, the Director will provide hands-on leadership of the company's Safety function. Initial responsibilities may include: ● Developing, implementing, and enforcing company safety policies and procedures. ● Conducting or coordinating safety meetings, training, and employee coaching. ● Monitoring driver and field safety performance. ● Reviewing Samsara safety events and identifying unsafe driving trends. ● Coordinating corrective action with supervisors, management, and Human Resources. ● Investigating vehicle accidents and workplace safety incidents. ● Identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions. ● Supporting OSHA, DOT, FMCSA, and other applicable regulatory compliance. ● Maintaining required safety and incident documentation. ● Reviewing safety trends and identifying areas requiring additional training or management attention. ● Supporting post-accident procedures and investigations. ● Promoting a strong company-wide culture of safety and accountability.
