The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Ferry Division is looking for an individual with strong leadership skills who is passionate about service, safety, and the coastal community.

The Ferry Operations Manager at Hatteras Supervises & Leads: managing all vessel and shore personnel, ensuring smooth coordination between ferry operations and shore support facilities; Responsible for Facility Oversight: ensuring buildings, marine infrastructure, and equipment are maintained by reporting any needs that support facilities integral to ferry operations; Budget Management: Analyze and recommend operating budgets for the shift that secure fiscal sustainability while meeting growing demands; Crew Planning: Strategically plan and schedule crew for vessel operations, adapting to seven-day week operations, seasonal traffic, and vessel changes; Safety & Compliance: Enforce and monitor compliance with safety standards set by OSHA, the U.S. Coast Guard, the FCC, and other state and federal agencies, ensuring vessels are staffed with U.S. Coast Guard certified crewmembers.

As a Ferry Terminal Operations Manager, you are not just overseeing logistics but ensuring that North Carolina's coastal communities remain connected and thriving. Your leadership keeps essential ferry services running smoothly, enabling residents to access work, school, and healthcare. Tourists and businesses rely on the Ferry Division's reliable transportation, making your role an integral part of the Division. By upholding safety standards and operational efficiency, you help create a safe, seamless travel experience for the citizens of and visitors to the North Carolina Outer Banks.


This position works out of the Hatteras Ferry Operations and works shift work - 7 days on/7 days off. Dormitory housing may be available for the duration of the work shift.

The selected applicant for this position must possess Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC16 - $57,983 to $101,470

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of ferry vessels.

  • Demonstrated ability to ensure NCDOT Ferry Division polices are communicated, applied, and enforced. (i.e. safety, accounting, operational, regulatory, and administrative)

  • Experience in planning, organizing, delegating, creating schedules, and budgets.

  • Experience scheduling and communicating with and dispatch ferry crews, work crews, equipment or equipment vehicles to appropriate locations according to specifications or safety needs.

  • Knowledge of all applicable USCG rules and regulations that directly impact ferry operations.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of experience in office management or related administrative work; or,

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma with six years of experience in office management or related administrative work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

Possession of a valid Ordinary Seaman (OS) Certificate issued by the U.S. Coast Guard within 90 days of hire.
