Executive Project Engineer Job Description Position summary Reports to: President We are seeking an engineer with hands-on experience in district energy or central plant operations to work directly alongside the President and executive team of a growing, successful group of businesses spanning district energy, building services, and energy infrastructure development. You will apply engineering judgment to strategic decisions about thermal generation, distribution, and new development, and see how strategy is set and how capital projects move from concept to commissioning. The Executive Project Engineer is the technical and coordination hub for the development and implementation of strategic initiatives. You will evaluate engineering and operational opportunities, build the technical and financial case for decisions, translate priorities into executable project plans, and keep implementation on schedule across multiple companies. The role demands strict confidentiality, sound engineering judgment, and clear communication with both executives and field personnel. Key responsibilities Technical strategy and evaluation Work with the President to evaluate opportunities across steam, hot water, and chilled water systems, including plant upgrades, distribution expansion, customer interconnections, efficiency improvements, and new ventures. Perform engineering and economic analyses: load forecasting, capacity and redundancy assessments, fuel and utility cost modeling, lifecycle cost, ROI, and payback. Assess boiler, chiller, cooling tower, thermal storage, and combined heat and power (CHP) options, along with steam, condensate, and chilled water distribution improvements. Review and interpret P&IDs, design drawings, specifications, equipment data, and plant performance data (BAS/SCADA trends, efficiency, losses). Prepare technical briefs, engineering analyses, decision memos, and presentations that translate findings into clear recommendations for the President and executive team. Help turn high-level direction into defined initiatives with clear technical scope, budgets, schedules, owners, and success measures. Communication and coordination Communicate prioritized initiatives clearly and consistently to the executive team and relevant managers across the companies. Serve as the central point of coordination between the President, executives, plant operations, and project teams, keeping information flowing in both directions. Facilitate leadership and initiative meetings: set agendas, capture decisions and action items, and follow through on commitments. Identify technical and operational dependencies across companies and connect the right people to resolve them. Capital project and initiative management Coordinate with consulting engineers, contractors, equipment vendors, and operations staff from feasibility through design, procurement, construction, startup, and commissioning. Build and maintain implementation schedules, milestone plans, and a portfolio view of all active strategic initiatives and capital projects. Track cost, schedule, and technical risk; flag slippage early and recommend corrective actions. Provide regular status reporting to the President and executive team. Maintain organized documentation of initiative plans, decisions, and outcomes. Support regulatory, permitting, and code compliance (e.g., ASME boiler and pressure vessel requirements, air permits, local codes) and the associated documentation. Confidentiality and judgment Handle sensitive technical, commercial, financial, customer, personnel, and strategic information with complete discretion. Represent the President's office professionally with internal teams, customers, municipal partners, and outside firms. Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, chemical, or energy engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline. Working knowledge of steam and hot water generation and distribution, chilled water production and distr…
