ELECTRIC DISTRIBUTION APPRENTICE/JOURNEY LINEMAN
CITY OF WELLINGTONPosition Summary Performs routine semi-skilled and skilled work in the construction and maintenance of the electric utility distribution system leading to the acquisition of journeyman skills. Work is performed under immediate supervision of Distribution Supervisor or Crew Leader. Responsible for helping to deliver reliable, safe and affordable power for the City of Wellington. Essential Functions Duties and responsibilities, as required by business necessity may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing. Schedule and shift assignments and work location may be changed at any time, as required by business necessity. 1. Climbs utility poles, operates a bucket truck, installs hardware, fuses transformers and pulls wire 2. Constructs, tests, maintains, removes, repairs and operates the underground and overhead distribution system and substations 3. Maintains existing high and low-voltage lines 4. Properly utilizes and cares for hotline equipment and tools 5. Installs transformers and other auxiliary equipment 6. Carries out groundwork before and after jobs 7. Performs tree trimming and runs bush hog 8. Maintains street lights and traffic signals 9. Assists with maintaining PCB requirements to meet EPA regulations 10. Operates equipment necessary to perform work assigned including bucket trucks, digger derricks, directional bore machines, boom trucks, trenchers and other equipment 11. Drives and keeps trucks, equipment and tools in a clean and operating condition 12. Participates in regular safety training as scheduled 13. Required to be on standby and work trouble calls 14. Provides leadership and training to apprentice linemen 15. Assists with meter orders and AMI implementation 16. Supervises line crew in absence of Crew Leader 17. Completes substation maintenance as needed 18. Interacts with customers regarding temporary power outages, tree trimming operations or possible damage 19. Enforces and maintains compliance with all federal, state and local laws and ordinances 20. Performs other duties as assigned or deemed necessary 21. Complies with all organizational and departmental policies and procedures 22. Operates all job-related equipment, machinery, tools and other aids as required or needed 23. Graduation from a powerline school or an equivalent combination of experience and education 3. Will be required to be on stand-by and/or call-back to work trouble calls at times Certifications / Licenses: 1. Journeyman certification/card for classification 2. Ability to obtain a Valid Kansas Commercial Driver’s License within three months of hire Skills/Knowledge/Abilities: 1. Knowledge of practices, methods, equipment, materials and tools used in the erection and maintenance of electric lines 2. Understanding of the occupational hazards connected with the work and safety precautions 3. Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work 4. Ability to fulfill all duties with minimal supervision and to work independently 5. Assess situations rapidly and make logical decisions in a timely manner 6.
