Our trucks can’t earn revenue if they’re out of service or fail an inspection. As our DOT Inspector, you’ll keep the Southern fleet compliant and ready to roll by performing state and federal commercial vehicle inspections in the yard, about 10 per day, and making sure every truck carries the equipment it’s supposed to. This is a hands-on, yard-based role (not an office job) where drivers and maintenance count on you to catch problems before they reach the road. What You’ll Do Perform state and federal commercial vehicle inspections on Southern trucks and trailers to CVSA and FMCSA standards, about 10 per day Set up new trucks for service by assigning and documenting required equipment (fire extinguishers, chains, and more) so every unit is ready before it hits the road Apply DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and Southern safety standards on every inspection, with no shortcuts Complete inspection documentation and records accurately and on time to support DOT and FMCSA compliance Communicate findings clearly and promptly to drivers, maintenance, and supervisors so issues get fixed and units keep moving Take a failed unit out of service and escalate to maintenance or a supervisor to resolve Identify mechanical defects, damage, and safety or compliance violations before they become roadside violations or downtime Manage rigging inventory and equipment on every truck, tracking what is assigned to each unit and keeping it stocked and in serviceable condition What You Need to Succeed Required: Working knowledge of commercial vehicle inspection standards, including FMCSA/DOT regulations Ability to spot defects and safety violations on commercial trucks and trailers and document your findings accurately Able to work outdoors in the yard on your feet for a full shift, including lifting, climbing, and working around heavy equipment Dependable attendance on a fixed Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–5:00 PM schedule; our trucks depend on inspections getting done on time Ability to follow established processes, safety standards, and regulatory requirements Preferred: Commercial driving, trucking, heavy haul, or fleet experience; Class A CDL Experience tracking equipment inventory (rigging, safety gear, tie-downs, and similar) Former state trooper or commercial vehicle enforcement background, or experience with roadside inspections Familiarity with CVSA inspection standards Who Thrives Here People who succeed at Southern tend to: Take ownership of their work Show up ready to perform Solve problems instead of waiting for direction Value safety over shortcuts Respect the team and the job What You Get Competitive pay with consistent earning potential Weekly pay Medical, dental, and vision 401(k) with company match after 6 months Opportunity to grow with a rapidly expanding operation About Southern The Southern family of companies supports complex transportation, lifting, logistics, and fabrication needs across the United States.
