JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for optimizing MPC’s distribution system – providing short range planning, contingency planning, technology transfer, and technical support for the Distribution Control Center (DCC). This position serves as the first point of contact for troubleshooting and problem solving and is considered the Subject Matter Expert (SME). Demonstrates expertise in a specific technical field and regularly advises managers and non-managers on related technical issues. This position is also responsible for taking a leadership role by filling in for the DCC Supervisor when necessary.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIREMENTS
- Demonstrated ability to work safe and promote safe work behaviors
- Working knowledge of Southern Company Distribution Operating Procedures (SDOP)
- Familiar with the Southern Company Transmission Operating Procedures (STOP)
- Proficiency in computer applications (TCMS, DSCADA, CSS, STOMP, JETS, ARMS, ARCOS, etc.)
- In-depth knowledge overhead and underground distribution systems, working knowledge of electrical distribution and substation operation (including self-healing networks).
- In-depth understanding of electricity, knowledge of math/science, voltage problems, load requirements, general knowledge of Company policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates independent contribution by sharing knowledge with others; takes the lead roles in specific technical projects and consistently achieves positive results.
- Proven ability to establish effective relationships with other departments & organizations
- Excellent oral and written communication skills for gathering and disseminating information.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Optimization of MPC’s Distribution System by ensuring feeder balance and loading are monitored and corrective measures are taken by the Distribution Operators. Ensure that bus voltages are monitored and corrective measures are taken. Plan recommended load transfers and initiate VAR correction.
- Coordination with various departments for Short Range and Contingency Planning to alleviate potential overloading and/or voltage problems on substations and feeders (usage of TCMS Load Flow application).
- Monitors and provides report for DCC employee standards: ETR Accuracy, Outage Event Requirements, Outage Event Accuracy Requirements, SDOP Requirements, Abnormal Conditions Requirement, etc.
- Contributes to the specific technical development of the department and its employees by handling specific technical issues at all levels, including unusual or non-standard problems.
- Provides technical support for radio console databases and displays, ARCOS (callout program), solving various engineering problems for operators, and supporting engineers by recommending feeders for under frequency program.
- Works in conjunction with MPC’s training department to facilitate Distribution Switching School.
- Serve as the interim DCC Supervisor as needed, which can include filling shifts to handle normal/emergency work.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience Requirements
- A minimum of 3 years Class ‘A’ Operator (senior operator) experience required
- Must have 10 years of T&D field experience and college level math and electrical theory OR
- Two-year technical degree must have 8 years of T&D field experience OR
- Four-year technical degree must have 4 years of T&D field experience
