Distribution Driver
GROWING PLACESDistribution Driver – 25 to 37.5 hours per week Growing Places, www.growingplaces.org, a nonprofit healthy food access organization serving North Central Massachusetts, is seeking a Distribution Driver to support our year-round home delivery and wholesale distribution programs. The Distribution Driver will operate a large refrigerated van or refrigerated box truck to deliver fresh, local food to households across 20+ North Central Massachusetts communities according to established delivery routes. The driver will also make deliveries to wholesale customers, including food access organizations, businesses, institutions, and community partners , and may pick up local food from farms and other suppliers. The driver is responsible for safely operating the vehicle, loading and unloading food, maintaining product temperature and food safety standards, completing delivery documentation, and providing professional and friendly customer service. Routes will be pre-planned, but the driver must be comfortable navigating multiple communities, managing delivery schedules, and working independently. This is a year-round, part-time position averaging 25 to 30 hours per week . We are willing to be flexible when establishing the initial schedule with the successful candidate. Responsibilities Drive a large refrigerated van or refrigerated box truck safely and professionally on local delivery routes. Complete scheduled home deliveries to households throughout North Central Massachusetts. Deliver wholesale orders to food pantries, community organizations, businesses, institutions, and other customers. Pick up and transport local food from participating farms and suppliers. Repeatedly load, unload, lift, carry, and move cases, boxes, bags, and other food products throughout the workday. Safely lift and carry 50 pounds or more repeatedly , including loading and unloading the delivery vehicle. Operate a pallet jack and safely move loaded carts, pallets, and cases of food. Maintain appropriate food temperatures and follow Growing Places’ food safety and handling procedures. Complete delivery logs, temperature records, and other required documentation. Communicate professionally with households, wholesale customers, farmers, and community partners. Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and basic operational condition of the delivery vehicle. Report vehicle, equipment, product, or delivery issues promptly to the Logistics Manager. Represent Growing Places professionally and contribute to a positive customer experience. Requirements Qualifications Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License required. Ability to pass a U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) medical examination required. Experience driving large vehicles such as box trucks, refrigerated trucks, delivery trucks, or similar vehicles required. Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred. Professional commercial or delivery driving experience strongly preferred. Experience with refrigerated food delivery, food distribution, logistics, or local food systems is a plus. Ability to repeatedly lift and carry 50 pounds or more throughout the workday and perform the physical activities required for loading and unloading food. Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, push, pull, and maneuver food products and equipment repeatedly during delivery routes. Ability to operate a pallet jack and safely move loaded carts, pallets, and cases of food. Strong navigation, organization, and time-management skills. Ability to work independently and follow established delivery routes and procedures. Reliable, punctual, and comfortable interacting with a diverse range of customers and community partners. Customer service experience preferred. Mission-driven individual interested in supporting healthy food access and the local food system.
