JOB SUMMARY
The Director, Supply Chain shapes the vision and strategy of the global supply chain function to serve Orbis’s mission and strategic goals including the oversight of the global supply chain strategies and processes, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of goods and services, and best practice implementation across procurement, inventory management, logistics, and warehousing. It also includes talent development and retention of the global supply chain teams.
LOCATION
This is a hybrid role with preference for working near our New York City office or near our Indianapolis facility.
REPORTING & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The Director, Supply Chain reports to the Chief Financial and Administrative Officer and works closely and collaborates with team members from Clinical Services, the Flying Eye Hospital and Country Programs and connects regularly with Orbis employees in other units including Communications, & Development. This position will directly supervise one Orbis employee and our external logistics/warehouse partner.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS / KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
- Vision Setting: Defining a clear long-term strategy for how medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, and equipment move across borders to reach vulnerable populations in low- and middle-income countries. This includes program activities of Orbis’s Flying Eye Hospital, clinical services, hospital-based trainings and country programs.
- Mission Alignment: Ensuring that every supply chain decision supports the organization’s eye health-focused mission, balancing efficiency with equity and ethical responsibility.
- Global Perspective: Anticipating international challenges such as geopolitical shifts, customs regulations, or global health crises, and adapting strategies accordingly.
- Innovation Leadership: Introducing new technologies, systems, and processes to improve cost efficiency, responsiveness and stakeholder satisfaction.
- Stakeholder Influence: Building trust and credibility with donors, governments, and partner organizations by demonstrating strong governance and transparent supply chain practices.
- Vendor and Partner Negotiation: Leading contract negotiations with suppliers, logistics partners, and service providers to secure quality, reliability, and value while managing risk and ensuring compliance with global standards.
- Policy and Compliance Leadership: Providing clear direction on supply chain policies and standards, ensuring procurement, warehousing, shipping, and inventory practices meet audit requirements and comply with local and international laws. Collaborates with internal teams and external partners to maintain accurate records, reduce risks, and respond promptly to compliance issues as they arise.
- Country Office Partnership: Working closely with country offices to understand needs, strengthen local supply chain capabilities, and ensure seamless coordination from planning through last-mile delivery.
- Talent Development: Inspiring and mentoring teams, cultivating future leaders who can carry forward the organization’s supply chain vision.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Demonstrated success in a leadership role and strategic supply chain, preferably in Ophthalmological and International Non-governmental Organization (INGO) environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Supply Chain Management, international development, or a related field
- Minimum of 10 years’ relevant work experience, preferably with INGOs. with a minimum of 3 years of experience specifically in a logistics role at a senior level, and 5+ years of experience in management of teams with demonstrated ability to implement global supply chain strategies
- Substantial knowledge and experience with logistics including warehousing, procurement including competitive procurement process and mechanisms, developing specifications, RFP/RFQs/ tender packages, evaluation of bids, supplier evaluation, negotiation, selection and contracts
SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
- Knowledgeable of the legal, tax, customs and operational issues related to implementing international programs, especially in developing regions
