The affiliated businesses have more than 40 years of operating history. The transportation operation itself is established; it is being separated into a dedicated legal entity to create clearer operational accountability, stronger safety and compliance management, and a focused transportation organization. The current fleet includes approximately 30 drivers, 30 power units and 60 trailers. A significant portion of the work supports affiliated manufacturing and forest-products operations, including inbound movement of pulpwood, wood chips and other wood-fiber raw materials using specialized equipment such as walking-floor trailers. The operation also handles finished-product deliveries directly to customers. The Opportunity New Forest Logistics is seeking a Director of Transportation & Logistics to lead this established transportation operation as it transitions into a standalone company. This is the senior operating leadership position for New Forest Logistics and carries responsibility for the safety, compliance, financial performance and day-to-day effectiveness of the transportation business. Safety and regulatory compliance are core responsibilities of this position. The Director is expected to establish and enforce high standards for driver safety, equipment safety, DOT/FMCSA compliance and operating practices, and to hold the transportation management team accountable for identifying and correcting unsafe conditions or behaviors. Service, cost, production or scheduling demands must not override safety requirements. Key Responsibilities Lead day-to-day transportation and logistics operations across the company’s operating locations, with primary responsibility based in Salisbury, Maryland. Maintain overall accountability for transportation safety and regulatory compliance, including driver safety, equipment safety, DOT/FMCSA requirements, roadside and inspection performance, training, documentation and corrective action. Lead the Transportation Manager, Driver Performance & Safety Manager and Fleet Maintenance Manager, establishing clear accountability for safe drivers, safe equipment and compliant operations. Monitor safety performance and trends, including preventable incidents, driver behavior, telematics, inspections, equipment condition, training and corrective actions; require deficiencies to be addressed promptly and verify closure. Manage the transportation P&L, budget, forecasts, operating costs and overall financial performance. Develop transportation strategies that balance safety, customer service, fleet utilization, cost and profitability. Determine the appropriate mix of company fleet and qualified third-party carriers based on capacity, service, safety, risk and economics. Develop and maintain a qualified third-party carrier network and establish appropriate carrier safety, insurance and performance standards. Establish and maintain defensible market-based transportation rates, including fuel surcharges and appropriate accessorial charges. Manage fleet strategy, including equipment standards, utilization, replacement planning, maintenance performance and capital recommendations. Oversee transportation insurance, claims, loss trends, loss-control initiatives and risk-reduction efforts. Establish and monitor operating and safety KPIs, including cost per mile/load/ton, fleet and driver utilization, on-time performance, fleet availability, downtime, maintenance cost, preventable incidents and safety/compliance performance. Work closely with Operations, Sales, Finance, HR, HSE, Purchasing, IT and executive management while maintaining clear accountability for the transportation company.
