Director of Purchasing

Director of Purchasing Location: Remote – United States Employment Type: Full-Time Department: Purchasing / Procurement Reports To: Vice President of Operations / Chief Operating Officer About the Role We are seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Purchasing to lead the company’s purchasing function and help build a reliable, efficient, and cost-effective procurement organization. This role will oversee purchasing strategy, supplier relationships, sourcing activities, contract management, and purchasing operations while working closely with Finance, Operations, Supply Chain, Product, and other business functions. The Director of Purchasing will play an important role in improving purchasing processes, managing supplier performance, supporting cost management initiatives, and ensuring that the organization has the materials, products, and services required to support business operations. The ideal candidate brings strong procurement expertise, sound commercial judgment, excellent negotiation skills, and the ability to develop effective supplier partnerships in a dynamic business environment. Key Responsibilities Develop and execute the company’s purchasing strategy in alignment with operational and financial objectives. Lead purchasing activities across assigned categories, products, materials, and services. Develop and maintain strong relationships with key suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, and service providers. Identify, evaluate, and qualify new suppliers based on quality, cost, capacity, reliability, service, and business requirements. Lead sourcing initiatives, supplier negotiations, pricing reviews, contract discussions, and commercial agreements. Monitor supplier pricing, lead times, quality, delivery performance, and overall service levels. Establish and maintain supplier performance standards and review processes. Identify opportunities to improve purchasing efficiency, reduce unnecessary costs, and strengthen overall value. Partner with Finance and Operations to develop purchasing budgets, forecasts, and cost analyses. Monitor purchase commitments, spending patterns, and category-level performance. Support inventory planning and ensure purchasing decisions are aligned with demand and operational requirements. Work closely with Supply Chain and Operations teams to maintain appropriate product and material availability. Review purchasing processes and identify opportunities for automation, standardization, and process improvement. Establish purchasing policies, procedures, approval processes, and internal controls. Maintain accurate purchasing records, supplier documentation, pricing information, and contractual terms. Collaborate with legal and finance teams on supplier agreements and commercial terms as needed. Monitor market conditions, supplier capacity, pricing trends, and relevant industry developments. Assess supplier and purchasing risks and develop appropriate contingency plans. Support business continuity initiatives by maintaining appropriate supplier coverage and alternative sourcing options. Prepare regular purchasing reports, performance updates, and recommendations for senior leadership. Establish meaningful purchasing KPIs and use data to evaluate performance and identify improvement opportunities. Lead, mentor, and develop purchasing professionals while establishing clear performance expectations and accountability. Promote effective collaboration between Purchasing, Operations, Finance, Supply Chain, and other internal teams. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, Finance, Operations, Procurement, or a related field. 8+ years of progressive experience in purchasing, procurement, sourcing, or supply chain management. 3+ years of experience managing purchasing or procurement teams.
