Director of Operations
ConfidentialDirector of Operations Meals on Main Street | Full-Time | Reports to: Executive Director Location: Port Chester, NY (with moderate travel to Mt. Kisco and other program sites) About Meals on Main Street Meals on Main Street builds community through food, rescuing surplus product, preparing it into high-quality meals, and distributing it with dignity to people across Westchester, Putnam, the Bronx, and Fairfield County. In 2025, we served more than 1.25 million meals. In 2026, we're scaling further: more than 1.5 million meals across 55+ locations. The Opportunity We are looking for a Director of Operations to be the operational backbone of the organization as we scale. This is not a maintenance role, rather it's a build-and-improve role. You will own the systems, standards, and day-to-day execution that let us grow from a strong regional operation into a best-in-class model for food rescue, meal production, distribution, and community-based food access. You'll work across three interconnected areas: food rescue, kitchen operations, food distribution. You'll thrive in this role if you like being close to the work: on the kitchen floor, in the rescue truck operations, in the spreadsheet, and in the room where a new partnership gets structured. This role reports directly to the Executive Director and will partner closely with all staff and the Board’s Operations Committee. What You’ll Own Food Rescue Oversee, in coordination with Senior Manager of Rescue Operations, the food rescue pipeline from farms, grocery stores, and food industry partners, managing, sourcing, scheduling, transportation logistics, and intake. Build scalable systems for tracking rescued volume, source diversification, and quality control, supporting the goal of growing rescue volume year over year. Set and monitor KPIs for recovery efficiency (pounds rescued per driver-hour, source reliability, spoilage/waste rates). Oversee cultivation of new rescue partnerships to support expansion into Mt. Kisco and beyond. Kitchen Operations Oversee, in coordination with the Head Chef, day-to-day operations of the Port Chester Kitchen and Mt. Kisco Kitchen. Oversee kitchen staffing, scheduling, and throughput planning to hit meal production targets. Oversee standardization of food safety, sanitation, and production protocols across both sites so quality and compliance scale consistently. Drive continuous improvement in production workflow, equipment utilization, and inventory/waste management. Food Distribution Direct, in collaboration with the Mobile Pantry staff, the allocation and delivery of grocery items and cooked meals across all outreach networks. Manage existing delivery pathways including mobile pantries, community sites, and school networks, while establishing new community alliances to broaden reach. Collaborate with Development leadership to design and execute engagement initiatives that engage volunteers in distribution programming. Establish expandable tracking mechanisms to evaluate outreach volume across individuals, families, and neighborhood centers. Define and analyze operational metrics, delivering ongoing updates to executive leadership and key organizational partners. What You’ll Bring 5+ years of operations leadership experience, ideally spanning nonprofit, food service, logistics, or supply chain environments; food rescue/food bank experience is a strong plus. A track record of building or significantly improving operational systems, not just running what already exists. Comfort moving fluidly between strategic planning and hands-on execution (you're as comfortable in a Board meeting as you are troubleshooting a walk-in freezer issue). Experience managing multi-site operations and/or distributed teams of staff and volunteers. Genuine alignment with the mission of dignified, community-centered food access. Meals on Main Street is an equal opportunity employer committed to building a diverse and inclusive team. Pay: $80,000.00 - $8…
