ConfidentialJob Summary We are seeking a skilled and dependable Diesel (Auto) Mechanic to join our fleet maintenance team. In this role, you will diagnose, repair, and maintain a diverse fleet of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment that support essential public services. Responsibilities · Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and electronic vehicle malfunctions. · Repair, rebuild, and overhaul gasoline and diesel engines. · Service transmissions, differentials, fuel systems, cooling systems, exhaust systems, and drivetrain components. · Inspect, maintain, and repair electrical systems, chassis, and vehicle accessories. · Perform New York State pre-inspection services for motor vehicle inspections. · Operate and maintain shop equipment, including welding equipment, lathes, drill presses, valve grinders, and other specialized repair tools. · Read and interpret repair manuals, technical specifications, and service bulletins. · Repair and maintain specialized municipal equipment, including snowplows, mowers, pumps, road rollers, and sewer maintenance equipment. · Respond to emergency situations, including snow and ice removal operations. · Maintain accurate maintenance records and prepare repair documentation. · Ensure compliance with OSHA safety standards and safe work practices. · Assist with related highway, fleet, or sewer maintenance duties as assigned. Provide guidance and direction to maintenance assistants when appropriate Experience · Strong knowledge of automotive repair techniques, diagnostic procedures, and mechanical systems. · Experience repairing both gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. · Ability to diagnose complex mechanical and electrical issues independently. · Experience using automotive diagnostic equipment and repair tools. · Ability to read technical manuals and follow written and verbal instructions. · Strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills. · Ability to work independently and as part of a team. · Physical ability to lift heavy components and perform demanding mechanical work in indoor and outdoor environments. Applicants must meet one of the following qualifications: Option 1 · Completion of an approved one-year automotive repair training program; and · Two years of automotive repair experience, including at least one year in a supervisory capacity. Option 2 · Three years of automotive repair experience, including at least one year in a supervisory capacity. Candidates with the following may be given additional consideration: · Experience maintaining municipal or heavy equipment fleets. · Experience with diesel engine diagnostics and repair. · Welding and fabrication experience. · ASE certifications or equivalent industry credentials. · Commercial vehicle maintenance experience. Required Licenses · Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or the ability to obtain and maintain one as required for the equipment operated. · Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English. Work Environment This position involves work in both shop and field environments and may require responding to emergency situations outside normal working hours. Employees regularly lift heavy equipment, work around moving machinery, and are exposed to varying weather conditions while maintaining public service vehicles and equipment. Why Join Us?
