This position is responsible for the inspection, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and repair of company vehicles, trailers, construction equipment, and support equipment. The Diesel Mechanic works closely with the Fleet Manager to help ensure Sonoma's fleet and equipment remain safe, reliable, and ready to support field operations. The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, safety-focused, dependable, and proactive. This individual will not only perform repairs but will also identify additional maintenance opportunities that help minimize equipment downtime and improve operational efficiency. Job Summary Responsible for repairs and required preventive maintenance of construction equipment, trucks, trailers, and support equipment including but not limited to excavators, skid steers, directional drills, pickup trucks, service trucks, trailers, generators, pumps, and small equipment. Maintenance and repair needs are identified through Sonoma's equipment inspection system and are prioritized by the Fleet Manager based on operational demands, equipment availability, project schedules, and business needs. The Diesel Mechanic will work directly with the Fleet Manager to establish daily and weekly priorities while remaining flexible as priorities shift based on equipment requirements and field operations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on company vehicles, trailers, construction equipment, and tools in house and/or on site when required. Inspect, troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and operational issues. Perform required maintenance services including fluid changes, lubrication, filters, adjustments, and component replacement. Conduct safety inspections and operational checks on equipment. Interpret work orders, service records, and technical manuals. Repair or replace defective parts, components, and systems. Test repaired equipment to verify proper operation and performance. Maintain accurate maintenance and repair documentation. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area. Proactive Equipment Assessment While performing maintenance or repairs, thoroughly inspect vehicles, trailers, and equipment for additional safety, maintenance, or operational concerns. Identify wear items, upcoming repair needs, and potential failures before equipment is returned to service. Communicate recommendations to the Fleet Manager so repairs can be completed while equipment is already at Sonoma's facility whenever practical. Help reduce unnecessary equipment downtime, repeat repairs, and costly field breakdowns through proactive inspection and planning. Operational Support Coordinate daily maintenance activities with the Fleet Manager. Remain flexible and responsive to changing operational priorities. Support field operations by ensuring equipment readiness and reliability. Regular attendance is required. Qualifications High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED), or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be at least 18 years of age. Minimum one year of diesel, heavy equipment, automotive, agricultural, construction equipment, or related mechanical experience; trade school training may be substituted for experience. Must be able to use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and testing instruments. Must possess basic knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures and repair practices. Experience working on construction equipment, heavy trucks, trailers, diesel engines, hydraulic systems, or electrical systems is preferred.
