Position: Developer, Hockey Operations [Remote]

Department: Hockey Operations

Reports To: Director, Research & Development

Our Purpose

We are building a championship organization that serves our fans, community, and business partners through world class sports and entertainment. We believe that Winning Matters, our Fans come first, with risk comes reward, great teams can achieve unimaginable results, honoring the Pacific Northwest is our duty and driving the business is our responsibility.

Position Summary

The Developer will be part of the Hockey Operations Research & Development team, responsible for building and maintaining internal systems used by scouts, coaches, and front office staff. The role centers on a React-based progressive web application used in all facets of the Hockey Operations department - for player evaluation, draft preparation, game scouting, coaching reports, and other analysis.

This is a small, high-ownership team where you’ll work closely with the people who use the product, ship regularly, and have meaningful influence over how the frontend is built. The position is primarily front-end focused with some back-end development required.

Philosophy

We believe good engineering in this role means:

  • Building tools that help hockey operations staff make better decisions, faster
  • Understanding what the user is trying to answer, not just what the ticket says
  • Choosing simple, reliable solutions over clever ones
  • Owning outcomes from problem through delivery, including incorporating user feedback
  • Noticing reliability or usability issues early and addressing them proactively
  • Shipping iteratively and learning from how the tools are actually used
  • Eagerness to learn the domain, grow as a developer, and be open to mentorship

You do not need to be a hockey expert on day one, but you should be genuinely curious about the domain.

Must-Haves

  • 6+ months of prior professional development experience
  • Ability to independently ship production frontend code in React and pragmatic TypeScript
  • Good judgment around data-heavy UI: tables, filters, workflows, state management, and loading/error handling
  • Ability to take loosely defined requirements and deliver a practical first version
  • Comfort working directly with non-technical users and translating their feedback into product decisions
  • Clear written communication and the ability to work with high autonomy

Good-to-Haves

  • Experience with GraphQL and/or Hasura
  • Familiarity with TanStack Query, TailwindCSS, or Vite
  • Experience building PWAs, offline-first workflows, or working with service workers
  • Exposure to Effect-TS or similar typed functional patterns
  • Familiarity with auth flows such as AWS Cognito
  • Background in internal tools, analytics products, or decision-support software
  • Passion for hockey or sports
  • A strong sense of design and UX

Key Considerations

  • This is a small team with limited layers between identifying a problem and owning it
  • Priorities shift with the hockey calendar — draft, trade deadline, free agency, and training camp all drive the roadmap
  • Some work is greenfield; some is refinement of existing systems. Both are valued equally
  • Offline and PWA reliability are important because users are not always at a desk with strong connectivity
  • Requirements are not always fully defined. Comfort with ambiguity is essential
