Brief Description

Job Summary
Under immediate direction and in compliance with straightforward and standardized policies and procedures, responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, sanitation, and overall appearance of Public Transportation facilities, including administrative offices, maintenance areas, operator spaces, and common areas. Duties include performing routine and detailed cleaning tasks, sanitizing restrooms, and maintaining specialized spaces such as locker rooms, the lactation room, and training areas. Monitors and maintains cleaning supplies and inventory, supports event setup and breakdown, and proactively identifies, addresses, and reports potential safety hazards.

  • Clean Facility Interiors: Clean and maintain all interior spaces of the Greenville Transit Authority facilities to ensure a safe and sanitary environment. Maintain lobby and common areas daily by sweeping and washing floors, removing fingerprints from walls and doors, cleaning glass partitions and entrance doors, and vacuuming rain mats as needed. Empty and clean wastepaper baskets and other receptacles, damp wipe and dry as needed to remove stains. Wipe down surfaces to remove fingerprints from desktops, bookcases, painted walls, and doors. Sweep and mop floors in offices, hallways, laundry areas, and maintenance spaces. Clean sinks, refrigerators, and small appliances in kitchens and break rooms. Sanitize restrooms, locker rooms, and lactation rooms by scrubbing floors, disinfecting basins, bowls, and urinals, polishing mirrors and fixtures, and restocking paper products and soap dispensers. Clean and dry water fountains and wipe down door jambs. Vacuum all carpeted areas weekly, including desk wells and hard-to-reach spaces. Dust horizontal surfaces of furniture, fixtures, and appliances, including gym equipment. Damp wipe and dry furniture tops to remove stains. Dust accessible windowsills and clean maintenance conference rooms. Perform monthly tasks such as damp wiping baseboards and moldings, dusting blinds and picture frames, cleaning door jambs, washing interior window surfaces and concrete flooring, cleaning cove bases, and dusting signage and bright work. High dust furniture, shelves, crown moldings, and lighting fixtures quarterly, and clean air diffusers and return vents.

  • Maintain Exterior Facility Areas: Maintain exterior of assigned buildings and grounds in an orderly and neat fashion. Sweep entryways, walkways, exterior steps and pavers without pushing debris into parking areas; remove debris, leaves, and litter. Clean exterior glass, windows, and entry doors; remove graffiti as needed. Perform light grounds work such as watering plants and seasonal tasks (snow/ice removal). Keep entrances and walkways free of debris and dispose of trash in designated containers.

  • Provide Event and General Facility Support: Set up and break down necessary furniture and equipment for meetings and programs. Move and relocate furniture and equipment as needed. Operate and maintain custodial equipment (floor scrubbers, buffers, vacuums). Post signage for closures or cautions when necessary. Track and communicate inventory needs for cleaning supplies. Report unsafe conditions, maintenance issues, or needed repairs promptly.

Qualifications

Job Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent training and/or job-related experience.
  • This is an entry level position for which training will be provided.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior custodial and/or grounds maintenance experience.
Driver's License Requirements
  • Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License preferred.
Performance Requirements
Knowledge of:
  • Cleaning chemicals and disinfectants.
  • General facility maintenance.
Ability to:
  • Proactively identify, remove, and report potential safety hazards.
  • Read and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Write simple sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses.
  • Maintain simple records and perform basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and effectively use ratios and measurements.
  • Be able to work without immediate supervision in the field after completion of initial training.
  • Be punctual and maintain regular, predictable attendance
  • Maintain effective working relationships and deal courteously and effectively with the public, fellow employees, and supervisors.
  • Use and maintain standard personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Operate light equipment, hand tools, and professional cleaning equipment including vacuum cleaner, broom, dust mop, bucket cleaning products, cloths/towels, buffing machine, scrub machine, etc.
  • Operate general office equipment to include telephone and computer for the purpose of submitting electronic timesheets or basic documents related to the completion of custodial tasks, such as a shift summary or repair request.

Working Conditions
Primary Work Location: Assigned buildings and outdoor facilities.
Protective Equipment Required: Gloves, face mask, and eye protection.

Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed with exposure to risk. Daily exposure to respiratory and chemical hazards. Monthly exposure to physical hazards. Seasonal exposure to extreme temperature and wetness and/or humidity.
Physical Demands:  
Constantly requires hearing, vision, pushing/pulling, twisting, balancing, standing, and walking . Frequently requires talking, carrying, handling/grasping, lifting, reaching, bending, climbing, crouching and stooping, kneeling, and foot controls. Occasionally requires fine dexterity. Rarely requires crawling. Medium strength demands include exerting up to 10 pounds constantly, exerting up to 10-20 pounds frequently, and exerting 20-50 pounds occasionally.
Mental Demands:  
Constantly requires tedious or exacting work. Frequently requires working closely with others as part of a team. Occasionally requires time pressures, frequent change of tasks, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, and noisy/distracting environment. Rarely requires emergency situations and irregular schedule/overtime.
