Controller – Wholesale Distribution

About Us Wholesale Tire Distributors (WTD) is a wholesale distributor of tires and wheels, serving customers across the United States. Our business includes domestic distribution, international sourcing, inventory management, and factory-direct shipments. We are seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Controller to oversee accounting operations, strengthen financial controls, and ensure accurate financial reporting and inventory accounting. The ideal candidate has a strong background in wholesale distribution or other inventory-intensive businesses , understands the financial impact of warehouse and supply chain operations, and is comfortable working closely with accounting, purchasing, and operations teams. Key Responsibilities Financial Accounting & Reporting Oversee daily accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and account reconciliations. Manage month-end and year-end closing processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting. Prepare and review financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and supporting schedules. Ensure compliance with GAAP and established company accounting policies. Investigate accounting discrepancies and implement corrective actions. Inventory & Cost Accounting Oversee inventory accounting, inventory valuation, and cost of goods sold (COGS) accuracy. Ensure proper allocation and recording of landed costs, including freight, customs duties, tariffs, and other import-related expenses. Reconcile inventory records between the ERP system, general ledger, and warehouse operations. Review inventory adjustments, write-offs, stock variances, and related financial impacts. Identify and resolve discrepancies involving purchase orders, vendor bills, inventory receipts, and product costs. Internal Controls & Process Improvement Develop and strengthen internal accounting controls, policies, and standard operating procedures (SOPs). Establish controls to prevent duplicate invoices, duplicate payments, incorrect cost allocations, and other accounting errors. Review existing accounting workflows and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and accountability. Support ERP system improvements, data integrity initiatives, and accounting process automation. Coordinate with internal teams to investigate and resolve financial and operational discrepancies. Operational & Cross-Functional Support Partner with warehouse, purchasing, logistics, and sales teams to ensure accurate financial recording of inventory movements and business transactions. Support accounting for imported inventory, in-transit shipments, and factory-direct orders. Provide financial analysis and reporting to support operational and management decisions. Lead, train, and develop accounting staff while establishing clear performance expectations and accountability. Assist with audits, tax-related reporting, and other financial compliance requirements. Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory or management responsibilities. Experience in wholesale distribution, import/distribution, or another inventory-intensive physical goods business . Strong knowledge of inventory accounting, inventory valuation, COGS, and general ledger reconciliations. Demonstrated experience managing month-end close and preparing financial statements. Strong understanding of GAAP and internal accounting controls. Experience working with ERP/accounting systems and Microsoft Excel. Proven ability to investigate financial discrepancies, identify root causes, and implement process improvements. Strong leadership, communication, and cross-functional problem-solving skills. Comfortable working in a hands-on environment and taking ownership of accounting issues. Preferred Experience with international imports, container shipments, and factory-direct distribution.
