Who we are Sonata Design and our sister company Empower Projects build hurricane-resistant homes across three markets. We design in Calgary, manufacture in Canada, and build in the Bahamas, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Canada. Vertically integrated means we control design, engineering, estimating, procurement, shipping, and construction under one roof, and the projects on our board right now include a gated subdivision, a canal-front villa program, and an island estate development where we are the preferred builder. Small team, real projects, no layers. The job in one sentence You own the number, from the first takeoff to the final cost-to-complete, and then you own the project the number turned into. Why the role exists A bad estimate in Calgary is an uncomfortable conversation. A bad estimate on Grand Bahama is a container of the wrong material sitting on a dock, six weeks from a replacement, with a crew standing around and a client watching. Our projects cross three jurisdictions, two time zones, and a supply chain that runs through Calgary, Miami, and Nassau. Drawings reach estimating incomplete. A supplier quotes a lead time on a call and it never lands in the tracker. Scope changes appear in week nine and nobody prices them until week fourteen. We need one person who prices the work properly, then stays with it. Not an estimating desk that hands off and moves on. What you will own The number Review drawings, plans, and specifications, and prepare quantity takeoffs for light gauge steel framing, structural insulated panels, foundations, finishes, and every major scope Build and maintain cost estimates and pricing models for single-family, multi-family, hospitality, and light-commercial work Write the assumptions down. An estimate without a stated scope is a guess with a decimal point Suppliers and quotes Issue RFQs to suppliers and subcontractors, chase them, and compare them on the same basis Negotiate pricing, lead times, terms, and volume with suppliers in Canada, Miami, the Bahamas, and the wider Caribbean Keep the cost and vendor database current, because a price from last March is not a price The budget after it is won Build project budgets that line up with the drawings, the schedule, and the shipping reality Track cost-to-complete, variances, and procurement risk, and raise them early and in writing Maintain estimate logs, cost trackers, and revision history so anyone can see how the number moved and why The project Run early-stage planning, procurement schedules, and scope reviews with ownership and the site teams Support two island job sites with cost clarifications, updated takeoffs, and specification changes Own document control and version tracking across Google Workspace and Procore Travel to site as required to confirm measurements, collect data, and find the conditions that drawings do not show The system Improve the estimating templates, the cost database, and the standard operating procedures as you use them Help us build assisted takeoff and automated cost extraction. We are an AI-forward group and this is not decoration What success looks like at 90 days You have priced a live project end to end, and the cost-to-complete you publish is the number ownership plans against. Nobody rebuilds your math before they trust it. What we are looking for Three or more years estimating construction work: residential, light commercial, modular, or off-site You can read a drawing set and say what is missing from it before you price it Fluent in a takeoff tool such as Bluebeam, PlanSwift, or equivalent, and genuinely strong in Excel or Google Sheets You have negotiated with suppliers, not only collected their quotes You can defend a number in front of ownership and a client without getting defensive about it Writing clear enough that your emails go out without being rewritten Willing to work across Mountain, Eastern, and Atlantic time zones Organized by instinct. If your own systems are a mess, this will not wor…
