Southwest Road & Safety ContractorsJob Overview We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Chief Diesel Mechanic to lead our heavy equipment maintenance team. In this vital role, you will oversee the repair, diagnostics, and maintenance of a diverse fleet of diesel-powered machinery and vehicles, ensuring optimal performance and safety. Responsibilities Lead the diagnosis, repair, and overhaul of diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, air brake systems, suspension components, and other mechanical systems on heavy equipment and vehicles. Perform fabrication and welding tasks to modify or repair equipment as needed, utilizing power tools and hand tools with precision. Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance on equipment such as excavators, cranes, forklifts, farm machinery, industrial equipment, and tractor-trailers to ensure safety and compliance. Interpret schematics, technical manuals, and electrical diagrams to troubleshoot complex automotive electrical systems and mechanical failures effectively. Oversee vehicle maintenance programs to maximize uptime; perform tire service, alignment adjustments, shocks & struts replacements, HVAC repairs, and suspension work. Ensure all repairs meet industry standards for heavy truck repair and automotive diagnostics; maintain detailed service records for all work performed. Collaborate with team members to uphold safety protocols during heavy lifting operations and equipment repairs while promoting a culture of continuous improvement. Skills Extensive dealership experience with heavy equipment mechanics or automotive repair is highly preferred. Proficiency in fabricating components using welding techniques; skilled in using power tools and hand tools for assembly and repairs. Strong knowledge of Caterpillar, Cummins, or other major diesel engine brands; experience working with excavators, cranes, forklifts, and farm machinery. Ability to read schematics accurately; excellent understanding of vehicle systems including hydraulics, electrical systems, transmissions, brakes (including air brake systems), suspension components, and HVAC systems. Demonstrated expertise in heavy equipment operation along with vehicle maintenance for truck drivers; capable of performing heavy lifting safely. Mechanical knowledge complemented by automotive electrical system repair skills; adept at troubleshooting complex issues efficiently. Excellent customer service skills with the ability to communicate technical information clearly; committed to quality workmanship and safety standards.
