The New Mexico Department of Health is seeking a qualified chemist to join the Chemical Threat Analytical Response (CTAR) Section within the Scientific Laboratory Division's Chemistry Bureau. CTAR is federally funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and serves as one of only 10 elite Level-1 LRN-C laboratories in the country. Why does the job exist? This position is responsible for conducting proficiency tests, standard material characterizations, potential event exercises, real-world event responses, and other sample analyses for the CTAR section. Position will also support outreach efforts to the emergency preparedness community and other stakeholders How does it get done? Perform advanced chemical analysis on clinical specimens (blood, urine, serum) for hazardous chemical agents and their metabolites using Gas Chromatography (GC), Liquid Chromatography (LC), and Mass Spectrometry (MS). Screen unknown samples for chemical threat agents submitted by first responders; actively participate in potential event responses and response exercises. Execute proficiency testing, method validations, standard material characterizations, and routine sample analyses to maintain high regulatory and laboratory standards. Conduct routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and performance verification on complex instrumentation (LC, GC, MS); assist with supply requisitioning and inventory management to ensure uninterrupted operational readiness. Assist with communications, presentations, and outreach efforts directed at the emergency preparedness community and key public health stakeholders. Who are the customers? Minimum Qualification Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or closely related field, and two (2) years paid experience in chemical experimentation and analysis in a laboratory setting. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Employment Requirements Capable of passing Department of Justice/Federal Bureau of Investigation (DOJ/FBI) security clearance for access to laboratories holding Select Agents, as defined by 42CFR73, Possession, Use, and Transfer of Select Agents and Toxins. Must obtain Hepatitis B and Rabies vaccination, able to differentiate colors, use of sterile techniques, and good manual dexterity. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate. In state and out of state travel may be required. Successful completion of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is required. This position is designated as Safety Sensitive. Employment is contingent upon successfully passing a pre-employment drug screening. In accordance with state policy, the employee will also be subject to random, reasonable suspicion, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing throughout their employment. Working Conditions Work is performed in a fully functional laboratory containing biological, chemical, physical, and radiological hazards.
